An accident occurred Sunday evening in Shannon County that took life of two Salem residents. According to the highway patrol report, the accident occurred Sunday night at about 8:00 on Highway 19 about four miles north of Eminence. Their report says that a 1997 Dodge Neon driven by 38-year old Jerry Light of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19. Light lost control of the Neon and it ran off the road, went down an embankment and overturned several times. The accident was not discovered until 4:45 Monday morning. Pronounced dead at the scene by the Shannon County coroner Tim Denton was 38-year old Jerry Light of Salem and a passenger, 31-year old Shelly Tighe of Salem. Tighe was found partially ejected from the Neon.  Both were taken to the Duncan Funeral Home in Mountain View. No one in the accident was wearing a seat restraint when the accident occurred. The Dodge Neon was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Tyler’s Wrecker Service in Eminence.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that the ground is still frozen and no grading would be done. District 1 and 2 crews are putting up road signs, cutting brush on various roads throughout the county, and catching up on routine maintenance.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Community Development Block Grant Workshop in Jefferson City on Friday. He said that Dent County did not qualify for any of the grants that were presented.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the 2007 Fiscal Year Budget for the county was certified and sent to the State Auditor. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Take advantage of an outstanding opportunity to view bald eagles as they soar over Montauk State Park near Salem at two events in February. The first event will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, February 2nd and the second event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 24th. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the programs are free and open to the public. Join a park naturalist to watch as the eagles glide across the skies above the Montauk valley. An active eagle's nest in the park also will be viewed. A spotting scope and binoculars will be available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own binoculars and cameras. Dress appropriately for the weather. Montauk State Park is located 20 miles south of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. The Salem Lady Basketball Tiger defense smothered the Lady Eagles of Mountain View/Liberty in the game allowing only six points in the first half, as they cruised to a 55-23 win over the Eagles in SCA play Monday night at the Salem High School Gym. Salem was led in scoring by Natalie Howard with 22 points followed by Allison Jones with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Salem snapped a two game losing streak with the win and are now 15-4 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA. They will host the Mountain Grove Panthers Thursday night in another SCA contest starting at 6:00 at the Salem High School Gym.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will try to get back to .500 as they will be in Willow Springs to face the Bears in an SCA contest. Salem is 8-9 on the year and will play nothing but SCA games through the end of the season in their regular schedule. Salem is 1-0 in the SCA this year. Game time is 6:00 for the JV with the varsity contest to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO starting at about 7:25 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Blues will be home to face the Minnesota Wild tonight. The Blues, two game below .500, are eight points behind the Wild with 33 games left for the final playoff position in the Western Conference. You can hear part of the first period, then the entire third period on KSMO Radio after the Salem Tiger basketball game.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed outfielder Preston Wilson to a one-year contract on Monday. Wilson joined the Cardinals in August last season after being waived by the Houston Astros. He hit .243 with eight homes and 17 runs batted in 32 contests with the World Series champions.

Funeral services for Myrtle Elva Cowan of Salem, age 91, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery.

Funeral services for Cordelia Grace Thomason of Iberia, formerly of Salem, age 93, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jean T. Decker of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Youth Ministry or Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral services for Van McDonald of Salem, age 91, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 Wednesday night. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Shelly Tighe of Salem, age 31, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
