The Dent County Commissioners approved the 2007 Fiscal Year Budget at Thursday morning’s regular meeting with a vote of two to one. The total budget for the county shows cash available at the beginning of the fiscal year of $1,706,944.69 with expected revenues of $4,442,080 and anticipated expenditures of $4,618,875 for all departments. The expected cash balance at the end of the year should be $1,530,151. The General Revenue fund will start the year with total cash available of $915,710 with expected revenues in 2007 of $1,462,086.  Expenditures are expected to be $1,570,912, with an estimated ending balance of $806,884.  The largest expense not previously budgeted in the general revenue fund is $110,000 for physical addressing that would be needed for E-9-1-1. The Special Road and Bridge Department Fund started the year with net cash available of $151,381 with total expected revenues of $1,219,500. The total highway and road expenditures for 2007 are expected to be $1,212,950 with an estimated ending balance of $151,931. Areas of change in that budget were additional money for fuel and lubrication, chip and seal, and white rock. The road and bridge budget also included $138,000 for equipment capital purchases for the year. The 911 Fund started the year with cash available of $111,722 with total expected revenues of $53,000, mostly from funds charged by Embarq. The 9-1-1 total expenditures are expected to be $79,200 including a $52,700 transfer to the law enforcement fund and $25,000 for equipment, and that fund should have an estimated ending balance of $85,522.  The Law Enforcement Sales Tax Fund has net cash available of $95,564 with total expected revenues of $968,965 with some $769,000 coming from sales taxes. Expected expenditures for the Sheriff’s Department for 2007 will be $705,681 and that included an increase in deputy salaries and $89,480 approved for the purchase of automobiles. The Dent County Jail expenditures should be $238,018 bringing the total expenditures of that budget to $943,699 with an estimated ending balance of $120,830. After much discussion and many comments from citizens, Commissioner Bobby Simpson made the motion to approve the budget, Commissioner J.J. Tune seconded the motion and Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles opposed the approval primarily due to conflict of the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney’s salary in the budget being reduced from $38,000 to $25,000.

An accident happened Saturday around 2:40 in the morning in Crawford County on Highway 19 about three miles south of Cuba that took the life of a Steelville man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Ford E-350 driven by 44-year old Russell Franklin of Desloge, Missouri, was driving south on Highway 19 when a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 driven northbound by 45-year old William Langley of Steelville, crossed the center line and struck the Ford E-350 head on. Both Franklin and Langley suffered serious injuries and were taken to St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur by Arch Helicopter. An occupant in the Langley vehicle, 46-year old Robert Wade of Steelville, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner and was taken to the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville by the coroner. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Miles Towing of Cuba. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint.
