The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Tuesday night. The board approved the consent agenda, which showed C.A.R.T. tax at $16,002.64 and sales tax totaling $92,143.67 for December. In unfinished business, City Attorney William Camm Seay reported that a hearing with the Building Commissioner would need to be held for the clean up at 817 E. Gibbs Street before the aldermen could discuss this issue. This meeting would likely be held next week. Mayor Gary Brown reported that he recently attended an Executive Committee meeting at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory and was pleased to report that the renovations and improvement to this facility is well under way. He also reported that the newest Law Enforcement class currently has 13 students.  Brown stated that this months water bills would be estimated due to the fact that the weather prevented meter readers from being able to open and view most meters. Brown recently met with the County Commissioners to review the current tax collection contract that is to expire in April. Brown reported a Planning and Zoning Occupancy Permit committee has submitted their recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commissioners for review. City Clerk Mary Happel explained that she has been in contact with the Secretary of State as well as the Missouri Municipal League concerning a question that was raised as to whether a sitting alderman can run for Mayor without resigning his alderman seat. She has confirmed that this can be done but that if the alderman wins the Mayoral seat that he must resign his alderman seat before being sworn in as Mayor.  He would then appoint, upon approval of the board of alderman, someone to fill his remaining alderman term. The board approved the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority’s recommendation to reappoint Bill Dobbs for a term of four years effective February 16, 2014. The board approved a $484.68 budget adjustment from the Street Equipment Maintenance to Capital Improvements Sales Tax Fund to purchase a dump bed that was previously approved by the alderman as well as a $1,875 budget adjustment from the Animal Control Equipment Maintenance to the Police Department Equipment Maintenance to purchase a radio for a police car. The board then voted to go into closed session.

The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter is assisting a five-member Salem family after a fire destroyed their mobile home and garage living area. Red Cross officials received information Monday morning that the family, who lived in the 800 block of Hunt Street, lost everything in the fire. Chapter volunteers met with the family Monday and provided financial assistance for them to meet their immediate emergency needs with the purchase of food and clothing. The Red Cross also provided comfort kits, which contain personal hygiene items, blankets and stuffed animals for the children. Volunteers, who will be following up with the family this week, also provided referrals to local partner agencies. Family members are staying with a relative.

An accident occurred at 12:20 Monday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 63 south of County Road 5190. According to the highway patrol report, a 2012 Nissan Titan driven by 50-year old Sharon Phillippi of Licking was traveling southbound on Highway 63. The Nissan traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned. Phillippi suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to University Medical Center in Columbia. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Nissan Titan was totaled and towed by Ron Dishman Towing of Rolla.

An accident happened at 9:55 Tuesday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about two miles west of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2013 Ford driven by 63-year old Themla J. Fraser of Licking was traveling east on Highway 32. The accident occurred as the Ford ran off the roadway and struck a concrete driveway. Fraser suffered serious injury and was taken by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Jay’s Towing of Houston.

Signups for the City of Salem Youth Basketball program will take place on Thursday and Friday, January 23rd and 24th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The final signup will be held Saturday, January 25th from 9:00 a.m. until noon. All signups will be at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently enrolled in 1st through 6th grades. The cost is $20 per child. The Salem Tiger Boys basketball team lost to Blair Oaks on Tuesday, 58-42, in the first round of the St. James Tournament. Zane Kyser scored ten points for the Tigers, who drop to 5-7 on the year. Salem will now play the Newburg Wolves on Thursday at 6:00 in the losers bracket of the tournament.

Shavon Coleman scored 19 points and Jordan Mickey posted a double-double as the LSU Tigers completed a 77-71 victory over the Missouri Tigers in SEC play at the Maravich Center. Jabari Brown poured in a game-high 28 points to pace Missouri (14-4, 2-3). Missouri will host South Carolina on Saturday.

Damien Brunner registered a goal and two assists, as the New Jersey Devils notched a 7-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Alexander Steen scored St. Louis' lone goal. The Blues will be in New York to face the Rangers on Thursday at 6:00.

Funeral services for Gerald "Jerry" Marsh of Plymouth, Indiana, age 89, will be held today at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Garden in Rolla.

Funeral services for William M. Pitts of St. James, age 73, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Lawarence Turnbough of Davisville, age 83, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday night from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Davisville Assembly of God Church or Alzheimers Foundation.

Funeral services for Connie E. Woolf of Salem, age 81, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Linda Faye Coffman of Salem, age 58, will be Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
