Salem Police Chief Clifford Jadwin said that a 48-foot refrigerated trailer that was parked at the truck parking lot on Babb Lane is missing. The refrigerated trailer contained 2,722 cases of food worth $27,000, and the trailer itself is valued at $70,000. The trailer belongs to Kehe Foods out of Romansville, Illinois. If anyone has seen the refrigerated trailer or knows who may have removed it from the lot, please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight in the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00. After the approval of the consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant in his reports will conduct a Board recognition, he will also update the Board on the candidate filings, discuss the teacher in-service, update the Board on the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruling on NCLB and address the Judson Young Foundation donation. New business will include a couple of program evaluations, the Salem R-80 accountability report card and the “CIA” with student presentations of various types of performance events. Old business will be to consider the districts long range plan and vision and also the Dr. Darrell “Jack” Holley MUSIC scholarship. The meeting will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.
A three-vehicle accident happened on Tuesday, January 8th at 7:13 in the morning at the intersection of Highway 32 and Doss Road in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a black 1989 Honda Accord driven by Douglas Hobson of Rolla was stopped in the turn lane on Highway 32 facing eastbound and was making a left turn into a private drive. A maroon 2000 Dodge Caravan driven by Frank Ganschinietz of Salem, was also traveling eastbound on Highway 32. Ganschinietz said he fell asleep causing the Dodge to veer into the turn lane striking the Honda from behind which caused the Honda to go into the westbound lane striking a maroon 1993 Ford T-Bird driven by Gregory Robinson of Salem. Robinson complained of injuries and sought his own treatment. The Honda and the Ford sustained moderate damage. The Dodge sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene.
Rolla and the Missouri University of Science and Technology have been selected as the home of a new University Development Center for GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric that will bring at least 30 engineering jobs.
Tuesday, January 22nd is the last day to file for a seat on the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors, the Dent County Fire Protection District Board, for a seat on the local school boards, for the East Ward or West Ward Aldermanic positions or even for the position of Mayor for the City of Salem. The municipal election will be held on April 8th. Incumbent Judy Thompson has filed for the one open seat on the board at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Dent County Fire Protection District has one 6-year term available. Incumbent Stanley McElfresh has signed up and is being opposed by Matthew Pappert. The Fire District also has one 5-year term with Grant Hamlet running unopposed, and one 4-year term with incumbent Elizabeth Greundel also running unopposed. The Oak Hill R-1 has two openings and Joel Devall has been the only filing. At Green Forest R-2, incumbents Amber Toman, Rick Shults, and Scott Shults have filed for a seat along with Troy Ard, which has three 3-year terms. At Dent-Phelps R-3, incumbents Darrell Skiles and Toby Toman have for the board, which has three 3-year terms and one 2-year term openings. At Northwood R-4, incumbents John Harrison and Tracie Inman along with Laura Parsons and Dennis Jessen have filed for the board that has three 3-year terms. Filing for the Salem R-80 school board thus far are incumbents Greg Stevens and Jimmy Williams along with Jack Blackwell and Joseph Howard. The board has three 3-year terms available. For the City of Salem, incumbent Mike Whitley has filed for the west-ward aldermanic position and is being opposed by Kenneth Nash, incumbent Jim McDaniels has filed for the east-ward aldermanic position and incumbent Gary Brown has filed for the mayoral position in Salem and is being opposed by Rodney Peterson. There is a $25 filing fee when filing for a city of Salem position.
The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will be closed on Monday, January 21st. Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 22nd.

Patrick Kane posted two goals and an assist, as the Chicago Blackhawks routed the St. Louis Blues, 6-1, in a Central Division clash at the United Center. Lee Stempniak scored the lone goal for St. Louis, which has dropped three in a row. Manny Legace sustained a sore right arm following a first-period collision with Chicago's Patrick Sharp. Legace completed the first period, making seven saves in the process, but did not return. Marek Schwarz began the second period between the pipes and allowed five goals on 13 shots. The Blues will host Nashville Saturday afternoon.
Wesley Johnson recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Iowa State Cyclones defeated Missouri, 72-67, in Big 12 Conference play at Hilton Coliseum. The Tigers (11-6, 1-1) were paced by DeMarre Carroll who had a double-double of his own with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds before fouling out. Stefhon Hannah contributed 16 points and Matt Lawrence 13 as the Tigers had their brief two-game win streak snapped. Missouri will play Kansas on Saturday night at 6:30.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards tabbed Chan Gailey as the team's new offensive coordinator on Wednesday. Gailey spent the last six seasons as head coach with Georgia Tech, compiling a 44-33 record which included six consecutive bowl bids. He takes the place of Mike Solari, fired earlier in the month after a two-year stint at the position.

Funeral services for Sara F. Hanes of St. James, age 80, will be held Saturday, January 19th at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will also be Saturday from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
Memorial services for Charlene Dee Buchanan of Steelville, age 37, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.
Funeral services for John Ronald Brewer of Linn Creek, age 37, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday morning at 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery.
Funeral services for Ralph H. Tyree of Salem, age 96, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will also be from 11:00 am until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for Joe R. Lacewell of Vichy, age 58, will be held at a later date. All the arrangements are under direction of James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
Funeral services for Vernon Major Pollard of Rolla, age 77, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
