missourinetAt the Dent County Commissioner meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse, both commissioners gave a list of roads that needed to be graded. In District 1, Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2440, 5070, 5075, 5150, 5440, 5490 and 6040 while brush would be cut on county road 5360. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson indicated that Dent County Roads 2270, 4283, 4285 and 4287 would be graded while materials would be added and grading done on county road 2240. Larson also said a man would be screening brown rock at the shed. Purcell said there was an incident with a grader over the weekend where someone tried to steal the battery from the machine. They were unsuccessful as they were scared off for whatever reason, but if the public notice anyone tampering with a county piece of equipment, please contact the sheriff’s office at 729-3241. Purcell also reported that all types of debris are blowing all over the place from several vacant old trailers off of Dent County Road 5070. Purcell said he will have to turn the matter over to the sheriff’s department, but he would hope that the owner would clean up the property on his own. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he and Commissioners Larson and Purcell attended the South Central County Commissioner Association meeting Friday in Houston that was held in conjunction with the South Central County Clerks Association meeting. Skiles said he was re-elected president of the association for two more years. He also stated that he and Commissioners Purcell and Larson made presentations to the Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2 and Salem R-80 school boards last Thursday. They addressed the Rotary Club Monday on the same issue. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley presided over the County Clerks meeting in Houston as she is president of that association and reported state legislators are considering moving the state primary up to February instead of holding it in August to give them more time to raise funds after the primary. The county clerks are against this move, as it would make it very difficult for clerk’s to find judges for elections that could be held in three consecutive months, plus dealing with weather issues and more. She did say absentee voting continues for the April Municipal Election. The commissioners did indicate there would be no meeting on March 30th, as they will be attending a meeting in Plato to discuss the 2012 Secure Rural School Act, and again on April 13th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Dent County University of Missouri Extension will hold a Spring Beef and Forage Meeting on this Thursday night at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room at 7 pm. This program will feature Will McClain, MU Extension Agronomy Specialist, who will discuss nitrogen sources for hay and pasture fertilization. Ammonium nitrate, which has been commonly used for forage nitrogen fertility, is no longer available in our area. Alternative nitrogen sources such as urea, super U, and ammonium sulfate, along with urease inhibitors that can be used to reduce nitrogen losses to volatilization will be discussed, and recommendations regarding the use of these various products will be provided. Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist, will discuss best management practices for developing quality beef replacement heifers.  With many producers now expanding their herds by retaining and developing heifers, producers should use management techniques that result in improved reproductive efficiency and longevity in their breeding herd. Additionally, information regarding the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer program will be provided for producers who wish to develop and market and/or purchase beef replacement heifers.
