The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock wanted to remind everyone that their office would be open from 8:00 this morning until 5:30 this afternoon for those who want to pay in person. You can also mail in your tax payment, but it MUST be postmarked by December 31st or it will be returned to you. You can also drop off your tax payment in the “after hours” drop box on the southwest corner of the courthouse lawn tonight if you can’t get to the post office on time or pay in person. Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes not received by December 31st will incur penalties and interest. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said road crews continue to install numbered county road signs, and they will haul brown rock if possible. Both districts have men working on a cargo trailer converting it into a service trailer for the county road and bridge department with numerous pieces of repair equipment permanently installed such as welding equipment, an air compressor, and more. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that brush would be cut on county roads 4330 and 4370, crews would be hauling brown rock from the creek and also screening rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the drinking fountain in the courthouse hall was broken and leaking, and needed to be replaced. A bid by Victor Plumbing indicated that a new fountain would cost $416.02 plus about $50 to install. The commissioners approved replacing the old water fountain. He also said the courthouse would be closed on New Year’s Day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she continues to work on the 2014 Dent County budget. At 10:00, the commission opened bids for the surplus Impalas from the Sheriffs Department and only one bid was received and it was from Schwartz Salvage. After the bid was opened and read, it was rejected by the commissioners. Their next meeting will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Decision Notice for the Bunker Area Derecho Fuels project has been signed by U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Thomas Haines. The project is located on approximately 22,887 acres of the National Forest System lands in Dent, Reynolds, and Shannon Counties. The purpose of the project is to decrease wildland fire risk to the community of Bunker and surrounding areas by removing, reducing, and/or rearranging hazardous fuels. It will also provide accessibility for safe wildland firefighting and to recover at least a fraction of the economic value of the storm damaged timber in the project area. Project activities will include mechanical fuel treatments and prescribed burning. Temporary road, skid trail, and fire-line construction will take place in support of the proposed action.

A new year is fast approaching and the Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages everyone to make good decisions regarding their New Year’s celebration. A traffic crash would be an unfortunate way to begin 2014. This year’s 30-hour counting period will be from 6:00 tonight until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1st. Last year over the New Year’s longer, 102-hour holiday counting period, there were 1,615 traffic crashes, which killed 12 people and injured 517.  If the weather is bad, allow extra time for traveling or be flexible with your plans. Check the weather forecast and plan accordingly. The Road Condition Report number is 1-888-275-6636. Depending on the weather, staying home might be the best option. Take the time to clean snow and ice completely from your vehicle. Make sure the windows are completely cleared to ensure visibility. Remember: Missouri law states if you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on. It takes only a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. If your plans include alcohol, remember that nothing ruins a party like a DWI arrest or a drinking-related traffic crash on your way home. Designate a sober driver before the party starts. If you cause a traffic crash, your new year might bring getting arrested, legal fees, medical bills, or jail time! You face the possibility of losing your license and will have to face your family and friends. If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay the price for the rest of your life. No one wants to begin 2014 in jail. Be smart and designate a sober driver.
