The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5690 and the rest of the District 1 crew would be cleaning out culverts in the Montauk and New Harmony area as well as screening rock.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that crewmembers would he hauling rock and servicing three trucks. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind vendors that the county paid the last of this year’s bills and any invoice sent in after the first of the year can’t be paid until the 2011 budget is approved. The only money that will come out of the counties budget will be for payroll. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that the judicial building will be closed Friday in observance of New Years, but the courthouse will be open, however on Monday, the courthouse will closed in observance of New Years, but the judicial building will be open. Curley also said the swearing in of county office holders will take place Saturday at 1:00 on the second floor of the courthouse. The county has also received the new 36 by 48 inch Dent County Plat Maps that are also on sale for $45.00. At 10:00, the Commission opened proposals submitted for an interoperable communication program. The only proposal the county received was from Interop-Solutions for a total of $91,381, which includes the equipment, software and license. However, the bid also included a “first in state installment” discount of $56,381, bringing the total cost of the proposal to $35,000 with a yearly maintenance fee of $3,500. Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash along with a committee will be reviewing the proposal and will get back with the commission before any action is taken. At the previous meeting, the Commissioners voted 3-0 to seek grader blade bids and those bids will be due by January 10^th at 10:00 in the morning. Also at the meeting, Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock and Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell came by to update the commission on the prisoner of war real estate tax abatement that was passed in the recent election. There will be no commissioners meeting on Monday in observance of New Years, so the next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

This year’s muzzleloader harvest is well above the 10-year average. Hunters with front-loading firearms shot 12,940 deer during Missouri’s 11-day muzzleloader season, bringing this year’s firearms deer harvest total to more than 230,000 statewide. The muzzleloader harvest was the third-largest in the season’s 23-year history and well above the 10-year average of 11,312. Top muzzleloader harvest counties were Oregon with 277 deer killed, Macon with 268 and Franklin with 267. The final segment of Missouri’s firearms deer season is the late youth portion that will be held January 1st and 2nd. The harvest during last year’s late youth hunt was 1,706.

With just one day of 2010 remaining, it's time to decide what your New Year's Resolutions will be in 2011. The Missouri Department of Transportation urges citizens to make a pledge to Drive Clear in the New Year. In Missouri, someone is killed or injured in an alcohol-related traffic crash every 1.7 hours. A total of 281 people were killed and 1,141 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver in 2009.  So, MoDOT will ring in the New Year by educating Missourians about the devastating effects and consequences of impaired driving with the "Drive Clear in the New Year" contest.  The contest will run from January 3^rd through January 7^th. By taking the Drive Clear in the New Year quiz, located on MoDOT's website at www.modot.org, and entering your name and contact information, participants will be automatically entered to win one of four $20 gas cards donated by MFA Oil/Break Time. However, everyone wins if motorists choose to always drive sober. The sweepstakes is open to all U.S. residents 18 years of age or older.  No purchase is necessary to win.  Only one entry per person is allowed.  Winners will be randomly drawn and announced by 5:00 p.m. January 7^th.   

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct the January monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 4^th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After a approval of the agenda, consent agenda and a review of the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will address bills, the 2011 budget for either approval or revisions and the truck payment due in February. The Board will then address candidates filings, which end on January 18^th. After the reimbursement report in old business, there will be the status of the inventory list and roof repair. Chief Brad Nash will then update the Board on the FEMA grant. The Board will then set their February meeting date for February 1^st. The January monthly meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem Sesquicentennial Committee is sponsoring a semi-formal “Snow Ball” dance to be held January 22^nd at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. There will be a DJ with dancing, a video with 2010 events and photo props will be available to commemorate the event. The ONCRC will be decorated with a snow and ice theme. Dress for men should be suits and ladies should wear a cocktail dress. Tickets will be available starting January 3^rd for $15.00 if bought before January 18thn and $20 at the door.
