An accident happened Friday, December 28th at 8:20 in the morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about five miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Harley Davidson driven by 22-year old Kevin McCarter of Salem was traveling westbound on highway 32. McCarter failed to negotiate a curve at a high rate of speed. The Harley traveled off the roadway, struck a culvert and a tree. McCarter and a passenger, 20-year old Justin Pryor of Salem both suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. The Harley was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker Towing of Salem. McCarter was arrested for second-degree assault (vehicular intoxication) and careless and imprudent driving.   

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a forgery, assaults, and counterfeiting. On December 11th at 10:27 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The report revealed that 19-year female of Rolla cashed a check belonging to a 23-year Salem male. At 3:00 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to an assault. The report led to the detention of a 14-year old Salem male juvenile for assaulting a 13-year Salem male juvenile. The juvenile was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. On December 15th at 4:01 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The report revealed that a 49-year old Salem female had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court and released. On December 17th at 9:56 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Casey’s General Store on South Main in reference to a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. The report revealed that person(s) unknown passed a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Signups for one east-ward alderman, one west-ward alderman and the mayor of Salem continue through January 22nd at 5:00. There have been no new signups. Currently Kenneth Nash and incumbent Mike Whitley have signed up for the west-ward aldermanic position, incumbent Jim McDaniels has signed up for the east-ward aldermanic position, and incumbent Gary Brown and Rodney D. Peterson have signed up for the mayor’s position. There is a filing fee of $25 for city offices.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers defeated Buffalo Saturday afternoon, 43-41 to win the Lebanon Tournament. Salem was led by Allison Jones with 18 points and Natalie Howard with 13. Congratulations Lady Tigers! Their next contest will be Thursday night at St. James. Salem got to the championship game by betaing Buffalo Friday, 52-34. Salem is now 10-1 on the year and they will play at St. James on Thursday.

The Salem Lady basketball JV Tigers took second place in the Lebanon Tournament losing to Lebanon Friday afternoon, 51-30.

The Salem Tiger Boys Basketball team lost the third place game of the U.S. Bank Invitational Tournament to the St. Joe-Lafayette Fighting Irish Saturday night. The final score was 55-45. Salem’s record falls to 7-4. Cody Wofford scored 11 points and Taylor Sirois netted 10. Salem lost Friday night to Waynesville in a hard fought contest, 71-64. Salem’s next game will be Wednesday against Licking at the Licking High School.

Mike Modano scored the only goal in the shootout and the Stars overcame a hat trick from Paul Kariya to defeat the St. Louis Blues, 5-4, at American Airlines Center. Keith Tkachuk and Stempniak each had a pair of helpers and Hannu Toivonen allowed four goals on 26 shots for St. Louis, losers of four in a row. The Blues face Detroit tonight at 6;00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Barry Stewart scored 24 points and dished out seven assists to lead the Mississippi State Bulldogs to an 87-75 victory over the Missouri Tigers in a non-conference tilt at Humphrey Coliseum. Matt Lawrence poured in 28 points to lead Missouri (9-5), while Stefhon Hannah and DeMarre Carroll contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The seventh-ranked Missouri Tigers of the Big 12 and the 25th- ranked Arkansas Razorbacks of the SEC will meet on New Year's Day in the Cotton Bowl, a game played in Dallas, Texas. Missouri won the Big 12 North Division, and although the team's only two losses came against an outstanding Oklahoma squad, the Tigers were denied a bid to a BCS Bowl. Still, they are making their first appearance in a New Year's bowl game since 1970. You can hear the game at 9:30 tomorrow on KSMO Radio.

Kurt Warner passed for 300 yards with three touchdowns, two to Larry Fitzgerald, as the Arizona Cardinals hammered the St. Louis Rams, 48-19, at University of Phoenix Stadium in the season-finale for both teams. The Rams finish the year with a 3-13 record.

Mike Nugent's 43-yard field goal in overtime helped the New York Jets edge the Kansas City Chiefs, 13-10, in the season finale for both clubs at Giants Stadium. The Chiefs finished the year with a 4-12 record.

Funeral services for Gordon Hagen of Salem, age 90, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery in Gladden.

Funeral services for Adolph J. Mueller of St. James, age 75, will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 at the St. John Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice or the St. John Lutheran Church.

Funeral services for Private Jeremy Michael Black of Salem, age 18, serving in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Wills of St. Charles, formerly of Rolla, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for Myrtle C. Rowan of House Springs, age 94, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time on Thursday. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery.

Funeral services for Gene Hagler of Licking, age 85, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Licking. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Chapel. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the United Community Help Center in Licking.

Funeral services for James E. Albright of Rolla, age 93, will be held Saturday, January 5th at noon at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the ST. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
