The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Judge Kelly Parker was in attendance to discuss the 2012 budgets for the Circuit Court and Juvenile Courts. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4150, 5510, 6090, 6220 and 6410. He also reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5480; and the hauling of brown rock would continue. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2160, 3190, 4050, 4060 and 5260. He also reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4030, and truck #114 would be serviced. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues and the last day to register to vote for the Presidential Primary that will be held in February is Wednesday, January 11th. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on Monday, January 2nd in observance of New Year’s. At the last meeting, Ted Cunningham was in attendance to discuss the 2012 budget for the Extension Office. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday, January 5th at the Dent County Courthouse starting at 9:00 am and that meeting is open to the public.

According to a release by Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich, the state spent three times as much money to reintroduce one-fourth as many elk as planned. Instead of paying $411,185 to release 150 elk into the state as budgeted, the Missouri Department of Conservation spent $1.2 million to reintroduce 39 elk. Plus, the department’s executive staff and commission discussed the restoration project in closed session, which is not allowable under the Missouri Sunshine Law, according to the audit. The conservation department disputes the findings and recommendations in the audit, noting the project costs were openly discussed and the commission was fully informed of all pertinent and relevant information at the time the elk restoration decision was made. Employees at the conservation department also split transactions to avoid limits or bidding requirements, according to the audit. In response, the department writes that it has taken steps to ensure employees are aware that invoices are not to be split to circumvent transaction limits.

The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District (ORSWMD) and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) work together to improve their cycling efforts of tires in Missouri, which generates approximately five million tires annually. The Ozark Rivers District has been doing its part to address the need for removing scrap tries by holding events such as tire and waste collections and illegal dump clean up days. Ninety-four tires, which weighed nearly one ton, were collected in a region-wide special waste collection held October 1st in Maries County. The collection also included 128 pieces of electronic waste and 17 appliances. The Ozark Rivers District has spent $44,120 over the past five years on tire recycling through illegally dumped tire clean up efforts. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources sponsored a tire collection free to the public from July 15th through 21st in the City of Vienna. The collection boasted 13 full trailers of tires, roughly more than 19,000 passenger tires. Public schools, private schools, parks, non-profit day care centers, other non-profit organizations, and governmental organizations other than state agencies are eligible to submit grant applications. Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock is reminding citizens that his office will be open Saturday from 8:00 AM until noon to allow citizens to pay their personal and real estate taxes for 2011. Citizens can also mail their taxes in but they MUST be postmarked by December 31st to not receive a penalty or interest. Citizens can also drop off their tax payments in the drop-off box at the courthouse, but again must do so before January 1st. Brady Floyd scored a game high 23 points as the Salem Tiger Boy’s basketball team defeated Benton, 69-61, Thursday afternoon. Jacob Kettner added 20 points for the Tigers, who finish the Rolla Holiday Tournament with a 1-2 record and are 3-6 on the year. Salem will play Licking on Tuesday.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team lost to Richland in the consolation bracket of the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, 74-53, on Thursday. Savannah Hanning netted 12 points and Kaitlyn Wells added ten more. The Lady Tigers are 1-9 on the year and will face Buffalo again this morning at 10:00 in tournament play.

The 8th ranked Missouri Tigers will be facing Old Dominion tonight in their final game before Big 12 play starts. Missouri is 12-0 on the year and you’ll be able to hear this game on KSMO, starting with the pre-game show, at 5:30.

The St. Louis Blues will be hosting the Nashville Predators tonight at 7:00. The Blues are 21-11-4 on the year and KSMO will join this game in progress following the Missouri game. The Blues will also be in Detroit again New Year’s Eve at 6:00 and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Rams will be hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at noon in their final game of the year. The Rams are 2-13 on the season. The Kansas City Chiefs will also be playing their season finale on Sunday, as they’ll be in Denver playing the Broncos at 3:15. The Chiefs are 6-9 on the year.

Cornerback Al Harris, who played with 4 teams in a 14-year NFL career, says he is retiring. The Rams placed Harris on injured reserve last month after he tore his ACL in a Week 10.

Memorial services for Erma Louise Webster of Piedmont, SD and formerly of Steelville, age 89, will be held tonight at 5:15 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 5:00 with an Easter Star Service at 5:00. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Pearl Sites of Cuba formerly of Steelville, age 95, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.  

Graveside services for Lawrence ‘Larry’ Adair of Craig, CO and formerly of Rolla, age 50, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Rolla City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11:00 until time of service at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

A visitation for Paul Williams Jr. of Rolla, age 32, will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the family of Paul Williams Jr.
