The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting 1
st District Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that good weather is allowing routine grading to continue. Simpson said that grading would be done in the Cedar Grove area on Dent County Roads 650 and 651, in the East Spring Creek District on Dent County Road 421and also in the Max Valley area on Dent County Road 538. The rest of District 1 would be hauling rock to the crusher. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done in Dent County Road 220 and on the Golf Course Road. The rest of District 2 would be cutting brush and hauling rock to the crusher. Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that the Courthouse would be closed Monday, January 1
st in observance of New Years. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday, January 4
th at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The New Year’s holiday is a time to celebrate 2006 and welcome 2007. The Missouri State Highway Patrol wishes to encourage everyone to include safety in their holiday preparations. If the weather is bad, allow extra time for traveling or be flexible with your plans. Staying home might be safer. If you do plan to drive to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. Also, if your plans include alcohol, choose a designated driver. Getting arrested could be the least of your concerns. There are court costs, medical bills, or perhaps jail time. If you kill or injure someone, you’ll pay a price for the rest of your life. The highway is no place for a driver who has been drinking. During the New Year’s traffic crash counting period from 6 p.m. this evening to 11:59 p.m. Monday, January 1st, all available officers will be on the roadways. Last year, 965 traffic crashes occurred in Missouri over the New Year’s holiday weekend. In those crashes eight people were killed and 403 were injured. That is one person killed or injured every 7.9 minutes. If faced with a traffic emergency, motorists can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.
The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold a special meeting of the board this morning at 10:00 a.m. in Council Chambers. The board will consider the renewal of property and casualty insurance. The meeting is open to the public.
Beginning on Tuesday, January 9th, 16th and 23rd the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road, will conduct a workshop series titled, Personal, Farm & Small Business Estate Planning Classes from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and these classes will be done via ITV and each site will have a local facilitator to assist. The cost to attend is $40 per person or $50 per couple or single business entity. All three sessions of this class in important. Session One will address Why Plan your Estate, Who Should Be Involved, What Materials You’ll Need, Property Ownership, Business Organization and Choosing Advisors, including attorneys. Session Two is on Probate here in Missouri, Estate and Gift Taxes and an Introduction to Estate Planning Tools. Session Three will finish up with Estate Planning Tools and discuss Communication Issues with Family and others. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by contacting the Salem TCRC by stopping by or by calling 729-8163.

The Rogers, Arkansas Mountaineers jumped on Salem early getting out to a 22-6 first quarter lead and never looked back as they blasted the Tigers, 69-29. Salem was led in scoring by Taylor Sirois with nine points. Salem is 3-6 on the year and will play Jackson Central Merry tonight at 6:00 for third place of the US Bank Invitational Tournament at the Rolla High School Gym. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
Natalie Howard scored 16 points to lead the Salem Lady basketball Tigers past Eugene last night at the Lebanon Tournament by the score of 48-41. Kirsten Stephens netted 13 and Allison Jones scored 11 as the Tigers move to 9-1 on the year and they will face Pleasant Hope tonight at 6:30 at the Boswell Gymnasium in Lebanon. The winner of this game will play at 6:30 Saturday night and the loser will play in the third place game at 4:30. Both games will be at the Boswell Gymnasium.
Today at 1:00, the Missouri Tigers will face Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. The pre-game show begins at noon and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio. Missouri is 8-4 on the year.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers will face Southern tomorrow afternoon starting at 5:00 at the Mizzou Arena. Missouri goes into the game with losses in their last two games and are 9-2 on the year. You can hear that game on KSMO radio.
The Blues begin a home and home series with the Colorado Avalanche tonight in Colorado starting at 8:00. Tomorrow night, the game will be at the Scottrade Center starting at 7:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio. The Blues have recorded points in the last six straight games.

Funeral services for Gerald Ferguson of Salem, age 68, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Fox Chapel in Licking. Interment will be in the Ellington Memorial Cemetery in Ellington.
Funeral services for Grace Alexander of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of St. James, age 101, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
Funeral services for Miranda Ellsworth of Breckenridge, MO, age 24, and William Thompson, age 15, of St. Louis, will both be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis today. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Miranda Ellsworth or William Thompson Fund.
Funeral services for Verlene Mathes of Salem, age 78, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Graveside services for Katherine “Tootsie” Marie Lay of Holden Mo., age 31, will be held tomorrow at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden. Memorials are suggested to Allen & Logan Mahurin Trust Fund.
