The Missouri Highway Patrol has released their statistics for the Christmas holiday counting period. During the 78 hour counting period there were five traffic fatalities reported, down from nine last year. Troopers worked 228 accidents, thirteen fewer than last year, during the same time frame. There were 94 injuries, compared to 105 last year, and 113 drunk driving arrests, thirty more than a year ago.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold a Special Meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, on Friday, December 29th at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 10:30 am. The Special Meeting is to consider renewal of property and casualty insurance. The Special Meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

An accident occurred last Thursday evening at 6:02, at the intersection of Highways 32 and 19 in Salem. According to the Salem Police Report, a gray 2003 Ford Taurus driven by Marsha Drury of Salem was stopped in traffic in the eastbound lane of Highway 32. At that time, a white 1993 Dodge D-250 driven by Glen Cox of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32 and could not stop in time and collided with the Taurus. The Ford Taurus sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitakers Towing. The Dodge sustained moderate damage. Drury sought her own medical treatment for minor injuries.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports for the last few days involving property damage report. On December 19th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a report of mailbox damage. The damage was reported to have occurred overnight on Dent County Road 549. On December 20th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received reports at various locations in the county of mailbox damage. The damages were reported to have occurred in the evening hours the night before. Reports varied from boxes being burned, destroyed and stolen. Locations where the incidents were reported to have occurred were on Dent County Roads 323, 411, 507A, 516 and 517. Also on December 20th, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department received a report of property damage located at the Lutheran Church off Highway 68 North. The incident was reported to have occurred over the weekend. A storm window and a stained glass window were reported broken. Anyone with any information regarding the reports of property damage to mailboxes or the property damage at the Lutheran Church on Highway 68 north, is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department by calling 729-3241.

C.J. Smith scored 25 points to lead the Salem Tigers to a 79 to 62 victory over the Cardinals of St. Joe Benton last night at the US Bank Invitational Tournament in Rolla. Taylor Sirois scored 16 and Jordan Davis added 15 more for the Salem Tigers who trailed 30-29 at the end of the first half, but outscored the Red Birds 50-32 in the second half to improve their record to 3-5. The Tigers will face Rogers, Arkansas tonight at 8:30 at the Rolla High School Gym. The Mountaineers are defending their tournament title they won last year over Booker T. Washington High School. The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will travel to Lebanon today to face Eugene at 5:00 at the Boswell Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers enter the game with a 7-1 record. If they win, they will play again tomorrow at 6:30, and if they lose, they will play at 3:30.

It looks like the Missouri Tigers might end up with a full squad when they play in the Sun Bowl on Friday. The Tigers have been hit hard by some kind of illness, with more than 20 players, coaches, and others in the Mizzou contingent coming down with something. But Wednesday, during the final practice before Friday's game, everyone was back on the field. Coach Gary Pinkel says some players had a tough time keeping up during their first practice back, but practice still went well. Missouri will face Oregon State tomorrow at 1:00 in the Sun Bowl. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio starting at noon.

The St. Louis Blues will be off until they travel to Colorado Friday night to face the Avalanche to start on a home and home series. Then in a schedule quirk, the Blues will be at Chicago in back to back games to start out the new year. You can hear the Friday night game after Salem Tiger Basketball and Saturday night after Missouri Basketball.

Funeral services for Erma Kinsley of Rolla, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Ridgeview Christian Church.

Funeral services for Elsie Lorene Ellis of Salem, age 82, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Elsie Ellis Family.

Funeral services for Gerald Ferguson of Salem, age 68, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the Fox Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ellington Memorial Cemetery in Ellington.

Funeral services for Grace Alexander of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of St. James, age 101, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Miranda Ellsworth of Breckenridge, MO, age 24, and William Thompson, age 15, of St. Louis, will both be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may made to the Miranda Ellsworth Fund or William Thompson Fund.

Funeral services for Verlene Mathes of Salem, age 78, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time Friday. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.

Graveside services for Katherine “Tootsie” Marie Lay of Holden Mo., age 31, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden. Memorials are suggested to Allen & Logan Mahurin Trust Fund.
