The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that county truck #117 was being serviced and a flat tire on dump truck #121 was being repaired. He went on to report that work crews were putting up numbered road signs that had been stolen, vandalized or damaged. Purcell stated that illegal dumping continues to be a problem on many county roads and if the public sees anyone illegally dumping trash or other articles along county roads, please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241. If caught, those persons would be prosecuted. It was asked if the county would allow people to “adopt” a county road to monitor for trash. The county does not have an established protocol in place to do that, but Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the county welcomes anyone who wants to remove trash along county roadsides on their own to do so, and the county would be appreciative of those efforts. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush would be cut on county roads 4437 and 5330. He went on to say that a worker would be screening rock at the shed and that some of that screened rock may be used on some soft spots on county roads. Presiding Commissioner Skiles wanted to remind people of the upcoming public hearings on the Draft General Management Plans that were rescheduled due to adverse weather in December. The first Open House will be held at Van Buren at the Youth Community Center on Tuesday, January 7
th starting at 6:00, followed by the Open House in Salem on Wednesday, January 8
th, in the morning from 10:00 until noon at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. The last Open House will be held in Kirkwood starting at 6:00 on Wednesday, January 8
th at the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center. He stresses that interested individuals in the future public use of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways need to attend at least one of the these meetings if at all possible, ask questions and don’t forget to submit your comments. The comment period on the draft plan has been extended to February 7
th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday at the courthouse at 9:00 and it is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Office released reports. On Friday, December 20th at 4:00 in the afternoon, deputies responded to the 300 block of County Road 6020 for a reported theft. The investigation revealed that a 20-year old female of Salem was the reported victim. According to the victim, a suspect stole $1,300 and an XBox video gaming system from her residence without her permission. Suspect information was provided. On Saturday, December 21st, deputies responded to the 600 block of County Road 3210 in regards to a burglary. Upon arrival, deputies met with the victim, a 40-year old male, of Salem. The victim advised that between December 12th and December 21st, an unknown person or persons had entered his residence through an unlocked window and removed various items without his permission. These items include several weapons, a wallet, leather coats and a cell phone with a total value of $2,700. Deputies responded to the 1000 block of Highway P in reference to a reported Domestic Assault on December 21st. Upon arrival, deputies met with the female reporting party who stated her boyfriend had struck her several times. Prior to deputies' arrival, the male subject had fled the scene. Deputies provided the female with information regarding how to obtain an Ex-Parte Order of Protection. After clearing the initial call, deputies made contact with the male subject involved in this incident. The male subject stated he was struck by the female and may have assaulted his girlfriend while defending himself. Neither party wished to seek criminal charges and the 12- Hour Rule was invoked with no contact allowed during that time frame. On Sunday, December 22nd an employee of Salem Memorial District Hospital reported that her credit card had been stolen from her purse while she was working at the location. According to the victim, a 35-year old female, of Salem, an unknown subject took her wallet from her purse, removed the credit card and left the wallet in a restroom at SMDH where it was later located. The suspect made several credit card purchases with the card. Anyone with any information regarding these reports is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office by calling 729-3241.
The Dent County Collector’s Office will be offering extended hours for citizens to be able to pay their real estate and personal property tax. The Collector’s office will be open from 8:00 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening today, Monday, and Tuesday. If you have any questions, please call 729-3911.
