An accident occurred at 1:50 Wednesday afternoon in Texas County that took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, 37-year old Gregory Dooley of Salem was driving a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am on Highway 137 about three miles north of Raymondville when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the road, and then struck a tree and embankment. Dooley was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Tom Whitaker at 2:55. His body was taken to the Texas County Morgue in Houston. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Pontiac was totaled and removed from the scene by A1 Towing of Houston.

An accident occurred at 4:15 Wednesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway ZZ about twenty miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 43-year old Jason Klamberg of Washington fell asleep while driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup, causing it to run off the left side of the roadway and strike a tree. Klamberg suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 5:42 Friday evening in Phelps County at the intersection of Highway 72 and Phelps County Road 5160. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 83-year old Eva E. Pospeshil of Boss, turned into the path of a 2005 Toyota Matrix driven by 45-year old Derek S. Adam of Columbia. Pospeshil sustained moderate injuries and a passenger in the Toyota, 5-year old Hayley E. Adam, suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

Hunters harvested 14,921 deer during the statewide alternative methods portion of the fall 2012 firearms deer season, which ran Dec. 15 through Dec. 25. Top counties were: Oregon with 320, Franklin with 300, and Howell with 298. Hunters shot 15,238 deer during this portion in 2011, and the record harvest under this portion was 15,907 in 2009. Called the “muzzleloader” portion since it was first held in 1988, MDC renamed this portion “alternative methods” in 2012 to reflect additional method options added this past season:  archery methods, crossbows, atlatls, handguns and air-powered guns. The late youth-only portion remains for this firearms deer season and runs Dec. 29-30. The archery season consists of two segments. The second segment remains open through January 15th.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports for Monday, December 17th. At 2:49 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Rolla male for stealing merchandise valued at $58.68. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 4:16 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 43-year old Nixa male near Highway 32 and Oak Street in reference to a drug investigation. During the investigation, it was found that he was in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Saturday, December 22nd at 10:50 in the evening, 36-year old Anthony Davis of Salem was arrested on a felony warrant from Phelps County for fraud. He was being held in the Dent County Jail on bond. On Monday, December 24th at 4:32 in the afternoon, 24-year old Dustin Staddard of Licking was arrested and charged with a DWI for drugs, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, no valid drivers license, no seatbelt, no proof of insurance, and possession of up to 35 grams of synthetic cannabinoid. He was held in the Dent County Jail.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley announced that Troop I recorded two traffic fatalities during the month of November this year. This is three less than November of last year. Total fatalities for 2012 is 36, which is one more than last year. There were 184 accidents with 64 injuries and two fatalities for November 2012 compared to 191 accidents with 50 injuries and five fatalities for November 2011. Reporting for November were Crawford County with 20 accidents and four injuries, Dent County had 15 accidents with seven injuries, and Phelps County had 59 accidents with 17 injuries and two fatalities.

Kaytlyn Wells scored 17 points to help the 7th seeded Salem Lady Tigers to a first round victory against the 10th seeded Conway Lady Bears, 66-53, in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament. Kristin Hemken added 15 points and Savannah Hanning scored 10 points for the Lady Tigers, who move to 5-4 on the year. Salem will now play 2nd seeded Bolivar this afternoon at 1:00.

The 2012 NFL campaign just got extended for five members of the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL announced on Wednesday that safety Eric Berry, running back Jamaal Charles, punter Dustin Colquitt, and linebackers Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson have been selected to participate in the 2013 AFC-NFC Pro Bowl.

Laurence Bowers was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists in Missouri Tiger wins over Southern Carolina State and Illinois. Also named the National Player of the Week by ESPN, Bowers scored a team-leading 23 points in Missouri's win over the Fighting Illini, while also grabbing 10 rebounds.

Funeral services for John Helton of Salem, age 77, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Victor Cemetery in Anutt. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association and/or the American Lung Association.

Funeral services for Joel B. Green of St. Charles, formerly of Rolla, will be Friday at 11:00 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the service time at 11:00. Memorials may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church building fund.

Funeral services for Bob Ray Morton of Salem, age 81, will be Friday at 1:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be given to the Second Baptists Church or the Disabled American Veterans.

Funeral services for Shirley Gillam of Viburnum and Steelville, age 80, will be Saturday at 1:00 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home, Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
