According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, after an investigation by the Missouri Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, the Shannon County Prosecuting Attorney has filed felony tax evasion charges against the owner of a company that owns farmland informally known as Camp Zoe. James T. Tebeau, of rural Salem, is charged with six felony counts of failure to file sales tax returns and pay sales tax owed to the state of Missouri.  The failure to file returns and pay sales tax is related to business conducted at a 350-acre farm near Eminence in Shannon County.  Tebeau runs Zoe Campitheater, which has been the host of several festivals, campers, and float trips. The alleged tax evasions involve the failure to pay sales tax for July, September and October of 2010.

An accident occurred at 9:58 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about five miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 GMC driven by 17-year old Tyler Maggard of Salem lost control on the ice covered bridge, traveled off the road, struck an embankment, and overturned. Maggard and an occupant in the GMC, 23-year old Kristen Catlett of Salem, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem ambulance. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The GMC was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Commissioners Gray Larson and Dennis Purcell said that the road crews had prepared the trucks and equipment for the snow on Christmas Eve. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the courthouse is closed Friday for Christmas. He also said that the new plat books are now available at $30 each. He wanted to let people know that the plat books are not a legal instrument and is to be used as a reference only. Ray Walden from the Salem TCRC was in to drop off a new agreement for the TCRC to continued to do Rural Addressing for the county for $12,000 a year which is the same as it was last year. The contract includes language that says the TCRC will continue working with phone companies as needed as the county considers transition to Enhanced 911 services. There is also a clause that would pro rate the contract in the event that the TCRC would no longer exist. The commission discussed the contract and approved renewing it for another year. Skiles explained that the county did not put this out for bid after conferring with the state auditors office, as the TCRC was the only bidder in 2008 and 2009. The auditors said that since the Salem TCRC is the sole supplier of these services that it did not need to be bid out. Ted Cunningham from the Dent County Extension came in to present his budget requests to the commission. At the last meeting, Deputy Wayne Becker and Sheriff Rick Stallings discussed their budget requests with the commission; and Chairman of the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee George LaJoie, presented Darrell Skiles with a plaque of appreciation of service on the board. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Sesquicentennial Committee is sponsoring a semi-formal “Snow Ball” dance to be held January 22^nd at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center from 6:00 to 10:00 PM. There will be a DJ with dancing, a video with 2010 events and photo props will be available to commemorate the event. The ONCRC will be decorated with a snow and ice theme. Dress for men should be suits and ladies should wear a cocktail dress. Tickets will be available starting January 3^rd for $15.00 if bought before January 18thn and $20 at the door.
