The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their December meeting Thursday evening at the boardroom. Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board and stated that in the candidate filings, incumbent Bernie Sirois has filed for one of the two seats that are available on the Board and Dustin Howard has also filed. The William Lynch, Upper Elementary, Salem Junior High and Salem Senior High School principals then updated the Board on various projects that the students had been working on involving students in need in the community. Fisher Tracks was postponed until January due to the weather in Iowa. Summer School for 2013 will be held from May 21, 2013 to June 14, 2013. Assistant Superintendent John McCullough updated the Board on MSIP 5, which for this year, is in its first phase and used preliminary data to show how the program would work. He will address each area of the MSIP 5 program in more depth over the next few months. It was noted that the co-op junior high track program with the rural schools was approved and will run much like the football program did. The Board approved the MUSIC Insurance renewal, which will stay the same as it has been. The Board then approved the library deed, which had to be done due to a misprint in the original deed. The selection of the MSBA Belcher Scholarship Recipient was postponed until January’s meeting. The Board then approved a request from Carvajal for looking into new security cameras. The cameras presently used were purchased back in 2001 and an update to HD with a DVR receiver and a recording log of six weeks are the newest version. The Board then accepted the resignation of Cary Davidson effective December 20, 2012, as a GED Credit Recovery Option at the Salem R-80 High School. The Board then voted to go into Closed Session.
An accident occurred on Saturday at 9:58 in the morning in Dent County on Route H about 1 mile from Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 75-year old Edward Lunn of Salem was traveling eastbound on Route H when a pallet fell off of an unknown vehicle striking the Pontiac, making the vehicle run off the roadway. Suffering minor injuries was 71-year old occupant Patricia Lunn of Salem who was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a family member. The Pontiac sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitaker’s Towing. The unknown vehicle is under investigation.
An accident occurred at 5:30 Monday evening in Dent County on County Road 4050 about ten miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 20-year old Alexandra Glidewell of St. Louis lost control of the Honda ATV she was riding, causing it to overturn. Glidewell suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle. The Honda sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by the owner.
Two American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter volunteers from Dent County are assisting a three-member Salem family after fire destroyed their home last Thursday. The Red Cross received a call for assistance from the Dent County EMD to assist the family that lived in the 900 block of East First Street. Volunteers provided resources to meet their immediate emergency needs with the purchase of food and clothing. Clients also received comfort kits, which contain personal hygiene items, and referrals to local partner agencies. The clients secured their own temporary lodging.
The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Friday, December 14th 12:01 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to US Bank in reference to a forged and stolen check. The investigation revealed that a 19-year old Lake Ozark female had tried to pass a forged and stolen check then left after she was denied. About an hour later, officers located her with a 21-year old Lake Ozark male of in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that had been reported stolen from Lake Ozark. They were taken into custody and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. That same afternoon at 1:15, an officer responded to Casey’s General Store located on South Main in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that a female pumped $32.65 in fuel and left without paying for it. On Saturday, December 15th at 7:56 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of East Center in reference to a domestic disturbance. During the investigation, a 50-year old Salem male was found to have an active warrant from Texas County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition. Later that same night at 10:48, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic investigation. The investigation led to the arrest of the driver for possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, December 17th at 12:03 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of East Third in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a residence and took property valued at $1,460. Anyone with any information regarding the theft of fuel or burglary reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will be in the Lebanon Tournament starting at 6:00 tonight when they play Conway at the Boswell gym. Salem is seeded 7th in the tournament. If Salem wins, they will play at 1:00 Thursday against Bolivar, and if they lose, they will play on Friday at 11:30 in the morning against the loser of the Dixon-Lebanon game. Salem enters the game with a 3-4 overall record.
Laurence Bowers had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and the 12th-ranked Missouri Tigers posted an 82-73 victory over the previously-unbeaten No. 10 Illinois Fighting Illini in the annual Braggin' Rights game. Jabari Brown added 18 points and Alex Oriakhi scored 13 to go with 14 boards for the Tigers (10-1), who have won four straight in the series. Missouri will play at UCLA on Friday.
Sam Bradford threw for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the St. Louis Rams topped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 28-13. Bradford completed 13-of-27 passes, while Lance Kendricks had a huge day through the air, catching four passes for 119 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown, for the Rams (7-7-1), who play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
Andrew Luck's 7-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne with 4:08 remaining lifted the Indianapolis Colts over the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-13. Jamaal Charles carried the ball 22 times for 226 yards and a touchdown for the Chiefs (2-13), who play at the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
