On Thursday, December 20th at approximately 8:53 in the evening, the Dent County Sheriff's Department, assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, served a search warrant at a residence located off of Highway 19 North.  Taken into evidence as a result of the search were an estimated seven pounds of what appeared to be marijuana with some being in brick form. The substance was field-tested and it came up positive for marijuana. Also discovered were scales, a metal smoking device, schedule IV pills which are a controlled substance, plus various other items related to marijuana and its distribution, and over $40,000 in cash. As a result of the search, a 43 year-old male was taken into custody and a warrant was issued for Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Keeping or Maintaining a Public Nuisance, and Possession Controlled Substance.  Bond was set at $30,000.00.

An accident happened on Highway 63 about 22 miles south of Rolla on Christmas Day involving three vehicles. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Hyundai driven by 70-year old Betty Gaino of Licking was headed northbound on Highway 63. At that time, a 2000 Ford was stopped on the east shoulder of Highway 63 at the Phelps County Road 6230 intersection with 39-year old Michael Case of Edgar Springs in the vehicle. At that time, the 2002 Hyundai traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided with the 200 Ford, the returned to the roadway and crossed the centerline and was struck by a southbound 2002 Chevy Pickup driven by 43-year old Michael Ridenhour of Licking. Suffering moderate injuries were Gaino and a passenger in the 2002 Chevy Pickup, 45-year old Ruth Ridenhour of Licking. Both ladies were taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla by the Phelps County Ambulance. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint. The 2002 Hyundai and the 2002 Chevy pickup both sustained extensive damage and were removed from the scene by Luca Garage. The 200 Ford sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Two winners were selected in the KSMO Radio, Fidelity Communications and Fairground Auto Plaza Big Family Give-A-Way last Thursday.  Marilyn Kirkendall of Rolla and Kelsey Owens of Salem each won $1,500 worth of items for the entire family. Congratulations to both winners!!

An accident happened on Thursday, December 13th at 10:47 in the morning at Highway 32 and Craig Lane. According to the Salem Police report, a blue 2002 Freightliner driven by Dario Laikert of Columbia was traveling south on Craig Lane. The Freightliner stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Craig Lane and Highway 32, then began making a right turn and did not see a white 2004 Ford F-550 driven by Bradford Elliott of Edgar Springs and owned by the City of Salem traveling west on Highway 32. Contact was made between the vehicles at that time. No injuries were reported. The Freightliner sustained moderate damage and the Ford sustained minor damage.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting and assault, property damage, domestic assault, and a suspicious person. On Thursday, December 6th at 3:31 in the afternoon, a 23-year old Salem male was arrested for stealing and assaulting a Wal-Mart employee. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on warrants from an unrelated case. On Friday, December 7th at 4:25 in the afternoon, a report was received in reference to property damage in the 200 block of South Warfel. Person(s) unknown damaged a black 2002 Mercury Cougar taillight and rear end. On Saturday, December 8th at 12:13 in the afternoon, property damage was reported at a residence on WestWood Drive. Person(s) unknown damaged Christmas yard ornaments valued at $190. At 1:15 the same afternoon, an officer observed a suspicious person running from a vehicle in the Warfel and Ellis area. After investigation, a 22-year old Salem male was found in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was issued two summons to appear in court and released. At 4:25 the same afternoon, a 31-year old Salem male was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for a warrant in reference to assaulting a 28-year old Salem female. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that 13 grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would be made to improve public safety in the 8th District communities. Readiness and capability is key to every emergency, large and small. First responders need up-to-date equipment and support to keep them safe as they put themselves in the path of danger to protect us all. These grants will make their duty significantly easier and less hazardous. The grants were written from the Department’s Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program. Grants in our area go to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department in the amount of $11,500, the City of Rolla Fire & Rescue will receive $30,935.80 and the Raymondville Volunteer Fire Department will be issued $12,000.

After losing to the Atlanta Thrashers in overtime Sunday, 3-2 ending their two game winning streak, the St. Louis Blues will host the Detroit Red Wings tonight at 7:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Basketball Tigers lost to the Fighting Illini Saturday night in the “Bragging Rights” game, 59-58. They will face Coppin State tomorrow night.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers and the Salem Lady JV Tigers will participate in the Lebanon Central Bank Holiday Tournament. The varsity drew a bye today and will face either Pleasant Hope or Crocker tomorrow at 1:00. The JV also drew a bye today and will face either Richland or Pleasant Hope tomorrow at 11:30.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will play Springdale, Arkansas tomorrow at 5:30 in the US Bank Holiday Tournament in Rolla.

Funeral services for Martin Gnemi of St. James, age 86, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jill Mosher of Rolla, age 50, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the High Baptist Cemetery in High Gate.

Funeral services for John R. Hudspeth of Salem will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Curtis C. Payne of Farmington, age 79, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
