The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported the final 2014 CART payment from the state has been received and it was $54,316.96. In 2013, the total amount of CART money received by the county was $620,168.85, while this past year the total receipts came to $645,598.69. That is an increase of $25,429.84 for 2014 which is about a 4.1% increase. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4160 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5440. Purcell said one man would be hauling rock from the creek and a crew would be replacing downed or missing county road signs. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2150, 3110 and 3290. He also reported that one man would be hauling brown rock from the creek while another man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind everyone to use extra caution on the roads during the holiday season. He also said the courthouse would be closed this Wednesday and Thursday for Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she is still working on preparing the budget for 2015. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday, December 29th at 9:00 at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met for their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. In the consent agenda, it was noted the city received $105,112.69 in sales tax revenues in December. David Klotz from Lake Paradise Studios was in attendance to answer questions the board may have about starting a TV show called “This is Salem.” He said the production company would need to partner with the city for $5,000 to get the project started and could have their first show ready by second week of January. The board was to discuss the proposed contract in closed session. City Administrator Ray Walden said a Planning and Zoning Workshop would be held January 15th at the Centre in Rolla sponsored by the MRPC and the City of Rolla from 9:00 until 11:00 in the morning. He would pass this information on to the City of Salem Planning and Zoning Board and also invited any of the aldermen who would be interested. He reported the Department of Natural Resources approved the recycling grant application by the city that will help pay for fuel and staff costs to transport and empty the recycling bins. Walden said the city provided more information to the Missouri Rural Water Association for the water and sewer rate study and should be getting the final report from them soon. Walden shared the Park and Recreation Department Pool and Concession report for 2014 that showed the pool lost $18,766.59 for the year which is less than the $28,000 lost in 2013. The report also showed there was a loss on concessions for the year of $6,563.06. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash was not in attendance due to illness and the board wanted to have some questions answered so this item will be brought up again at the next meeting. Walden also requested on behalf of the city employees that the city offices and departments be closed on Friday after Christmas except for the Police Department. By ordinance, the city offices and departments will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. He said employees would have to take a personal day to cover the day off and some employees would have to be on call that day for emergencies. Walden said there wouldn’t be any additional payroll unless workers did have to respond to an emergency which would amount to a couple of hundred dollars. The request died for a lack of a motion by the board, so the city will be open for business on Friday. The board approved Bill #3285 creating an Ordinance for the city to hold an election within and for the City of Salem on imposing a 3/8ths of one cent sales tax for the purpose of funding the local parks. The board approved the incineration of old police records from 2008 that include incident reports and files, non-criminal incident reports and files, accident report files, missing person and runaway reports, messages and teletypes, arrest records and summons, logs and racial profiling statistics. Any felony arrests, criminal reports and other serious incident files will be retained. The board then went into closed session where they voted 4-0 to not go forward with the TV Show from Lake Paradise Studios. The meeting was then adjourned.

Don’t forget the “Trees and Trains Exhibit” will only be open today from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and tomorrow from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. The exhibit is at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main. For more information, call 729-0029.
