The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on the candidate filings with three people having filed thus far including: Holly Erway, Steve Morton and Susan Jordan. In the updated building projects, the slabs have been poured at the high school and the walls are 90% complete. Structural beams are to be poured December 30^th. It was noted with the weather staying above 40 degrees more work is able to get done. In reports from the principals, Kriste Crocker reported that the William Lynch Elementary Christmas concert was well attended and the students did a fantastic job. The staff adopted two families for Christmas and the New Harmony Baptist Church along with the Carvajal family donated several coats for students who needed them. Also noted was that due to a shortened quarter first semester, grade reports will go home the week after Christmas break, January 10^th. At the Salem Upper Elementary, Melanie Wisdom reported that the 3^rd/4^th grade Reading Fair was a huge success with almost 400 students and parents in attendance. The 100-Mile Club has logged 2,859 miles and one student achieved the 100-mile milestone. The 5^th/6^th grade music concert was a great success. The SUE Art Club has a tree on display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Center’s Tree & Trains exhibit. Wisdom also sent a big thank you to the staff and community members, as 24 kids are able to have a special Christmas and a special thanks to Mr. Gary Nash. The Salem Junior High Turkey Trot went very well with 12 turkeys going to families. The Basketball season is underway. Several fundraising events haven taken place, donations from the community as well as Doe Run sponsored five students and the candy cane drive, and the staff helped make Christmas brighter for several Junior High students was reported by Bobbie Jo Lewis. The Chamber Choir took 1^st place at the SCA Choral Festival held in November. The Annual Christmas concert was held and the drama club also performed A Christmas Carol. John Smith wanted to send a special thanks to the Salem Methodist Women for a $500 donation and also the Vandivorts for providing lunch for all the students who went on the A-P field trip. In new business the Board voted to not use Edison for Summer School preparation for 2014, but instead, utilize the teachers resourcefulness. The Board approved the MUSIC, Liability insurance renewal and then accepted the resignation of David Cochrane as Track/Field Coach for the spring. The Board then adjourned the regular meeting and voted to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

There were three winners in the Big Family Christmas Giveaway sponsored by Fairground Auto Plaza in Rolla, South Town Furniture, Fidelity Communications, and KSMO Radio in Salem. Each winner will each receive over $2,000 in merchandise. The three lucky winners were: Ruth Williams of Salem, Lori Ard of Bunker, and Jim Asbey of Rolla. Congrats to the winners and thank you to all who participated.

An accident occurred at 2:00 early Sunday morning in Carter County that took the life of an Ellington man. According to the highway patrol report, an unknown person was driving a 2013 Ford north on Route M near County Road 100 when they turned into the path of a 2007 Chevrolet driven by 23-year old Kirk Odell of Ellington, who was also northbound. This caused the vehicles to strike and leave the roadway. Odell was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:45 by Coroner Erik McSpadden. His body was taken to the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren. An occupant in the Chevrolet, 23-year old Tasha Parks of Ellington, suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled while the Ford sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Mike and Ike’s Towing of Van Buren.
