The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Red Cummings was in to talk with the Commission about the big trucks and log trucks that are over the weight limit using the county roads and bridges. Cummings was asking that the Commission notify MoDOT and ask if they could bring in a portable weigh vehicle and scales to address the situation. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6575 and brown rock would be hauled. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4400 and 4403; and brown rock would also be hauled. Rock is being screened to be used later by the county during winter for traction on ice. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the final CART receipts were received and were down $6,436 from 2010. The county had budgeted $605,000 and the total came to $604,442.77, which is $557.23 under budget. Skiles did say that the reports for 2012 show CART funds are expected to be up. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to register to vote for the Presidential Primary in February is January 11
th, 2012. The first day to absentee vote at the clerk’s office is Tuesday, December 27
th. The Dent County Courthouse will close at noon today and the courthouse will be closed Monday, December 26
th in observance of Christmas. At the last meeting, Tom VanHatton and Mike Houser with the 100-Acre Rally came in to visit. The Road Rally will be held on February 24
th and 25
th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday, December 29
th at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, December 18th at 8:00 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the 700 block of William Avenue in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown cut four tires on a blue 1999 Ford Taurus. The value of the damage is approximately $400. That afternoon at 1:57, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1500 block of South Macarthur in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown cut two tires on a brown 1998 Mazda 626. The value of the damage is approximately $192.50. On Tuesday, December 20th at 7:07 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of East Fourth Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 34-year old male of Salem had assaulted a 31-year old female of Salem. The suspect was arrested for domestic assault in the 2nd degree. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. Anyone with any information regarding the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
Troop I, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded five traffic fatalities during the month of November 2011, which is one more than November of last year. There were a total of 195 accidents with 51 injuries and five fatalities for November 2011 compared to 211 accidents with 75 injuries and four fatalities for November 2010. The total fatalities for 2011 thus far are 35, which is nine more than last year. Crawford County reported 32 accidents with six injuries, Dent County reported 16 accidents with four injuries and Laclede County reported 39 accidents with eight injuries and two fatalities. Also reporting were Maries County with 10 accidents with two injuries, Phelps County reported 60 accidents with 16 injuries and Pulaski County reported 37 accidents with 15 injuries and three fatalities.
On Saturday, January 7th you can join a park ranger on an OWL PROWL to learn more about these creatures of the night. Explore fact and folklore about these little understood hunters of the night. Using recorded owl calls, the ranger will hopefully encourage the owls to respond and perhaps entice them to approach close enough for a good look see. You can meet the ranger at 5:00 pm for the free program at the Alley Spring General Store Visitor Center. Alley Spring is located six miles west of Eminence on State Route 106. The walk will be less than one mile, but dress for the weather. An adult must accompany all children. A bit of snow adds interest to the walk, but if threatening inclement weather or hazardous driving conditions cancel the program, call (573) 323-8093 during business hours Monday through Friday between 8:00 am to 4:30 pm or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/ozar.

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team will be playing in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament on Monday. Salem plays Conway in first round action at 5:00.
Phil Pressey scored 20 points and handed out five assists, leading 9th ranked Missouri to a narrow 78-74 win over 25th ranked Illinois on Thursday. The Tigers trailed 70-68 with two minutes remaining, but closed the game with a 10-4 run to secure their first 12-0 start since the 1981-82 season. Missouri will play Old Dominion next Friday night.
The St. Louis Blues will be Phoenix to play the Coyotes tonight at 8:00 and in Dallas Monday to face the Stars at 6:30. The Blues are 19-10-4 on the year and you’ll be able to hear those games on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Rams will be in Pittsburgh to play the Steelers, and the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Oakland Raiders. Both of these games get underway at noon on Saturday.
The Missouri Tiger football team will be playing North Carolina in the Advocare V100 Independence Bowl on Monday. You’ll be able to hear the game, starting with the pre-game show, on KSMO Radio at 3:00.
The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to terms on a two-year contract with veteran outfielder Carlos Beltran worth $26 million.

Funeral services for Belinda A. Hogan of Salem, age 58, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Juvenile Diabetes Association.
Funeral services for Emma James of Steelville, age 89, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville.
Private graveside services for Dorothy D. Porter of Washington, MO, formerly of Salem, age 96, will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning in the Anutt Cemetery in Anutt. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Graveside service for Donald Dwight Durham of Jadwin, age 59, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Timber Cemetery with military honors.
Funeral services for Franky Eugene Oehring of Rolla, age 61, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rolla. Visitation will be from noon until time of service at the church. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery near Doolittle with full military honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
