The Dent County Service Unit of the Salvation Army wants to announce that all the children on this year’s “Angel Tree” received Christmas gifts through the generosity of the residents of Dent County. There were 35 left as of last Thursday morning, but some caring citizens were kind enough to make sure that those 35 children were taken care of. The “Angel Tree” is a joint effort between the Dent County Service Unit of the Salvation Army and Wal-Mart. Also, the Dent County Toys for Tots was glad to also announce that all 244 children that signed up for the toy distribution will be receiving gifts for the children from age newborn to 12. None of this would be possible without the support of the community. The Dent County Service Unit of the Salvation Army and the Dent County Toys for Tots thanks everyone who helped make Christmas brighter for the children of our community.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their December meeting Thursday night at the boardroom. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on candidate filings. Incumbents Chris Heavin and Carrie Snyder have filed for the two seats available on the board. Filings for the two seats on the Board will remain open until January 20, 2015. The William Lynch Elementary provided presents for 12 families with the help of staff and community members. The Salem Upper Elementary collected 7,050 box tops and collected canned goods and non-perishable items to go toward five Dent County food pantries. At the Salem Middle School, students collected a total of 976 items that will go to the Shepherds’ Nook in Salem. The Salem Senior High had two more students ready to test in MO Options. In the 1st semester of American Government, 77% of those students tested scored advanced or proficient with the state average being 59%. A thank you went to the United Methodist Women for the donation of $500 for students in need.. Congratulations went out to Brandon Pike for being selected to the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corp on Trumpet. He will spend the summer in California touring and training. The FFA fruit sales were successful with sales totaling $62,000. The Board discussed once again maintaining summer school for 2015 and are looking at going 20 days. A total of three applicants were submitted to the Board for their review for the MSBA Belcher Scholarship. The board will select a recipient at the next meeting. The Board also voted to renew student insurance with MUSIC. The Board accepted the resignations of Superintendent Steve Carvajal and high school English teacher Heather Carvajal both at the close of the 2015 school year. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda in unfinished business, at the last meeting David Klotz presented a proposal of the City on producing a television show for the City. Mr. Klotz is appearing at the meeting to hear from the Board what their decision is concerning the TV show. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on current happenings and projects around town, and then give a report on the park and recreation department pool and concessions for 2014 and address days off for the upcoming holidays, followed by comments by Mayor J.J. Tune. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill # 3285 an ordinance required in order to put the question of whether the City of Salem shall impose a sales tax for the funding of local parks will be presented to the Board. In new and miscellaneous business, Salem Police Chief Steelman wishes to inform the Board of the destruction of old records at the Salem Police Department, as suggested by the Police Clerks Records Retention Schedule manual. The Board may vote to go into closed session. The meeting is open to the public.

Brent Burns scored with 38 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Patrik Berglund and Steve Ott each lit the lamp for the Blues, who have dropped two in a row. The Blues will be hosting the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night.

Rayvonte Rice scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead his Illinois Fighting Illini past the Missouri Tigers, 62-59, in a non-conference affair at Scottrade Center. Johnathan Williams III paced Missouri (5-6) with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Wes Clark contributed 11 points. Missouri will be off until December 30th when they play Oklahoma State.

The St. Louis Rams dropped a 37-27 decision to the New York Giants that officially eliminated them from the playoffs with a 6-9 record. The Kansas City Chiefs lost to Pittsburgh, 20-12 and will need a lot of help to make the playoff with their 8-7 record.

Funeral services for June Marion Swope, age 86 of St. Louis, formerly of Salem, will be this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.  Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the First Church of God in Salem or Cornerstone Community Church of God in St. Louis.

A private graveside service for Rosemary Dillon of St. James, age 85, will be held today. Memorials may be made to the St. James Memorial Public Library. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Harold Thomas of Salem, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library, the Salvation Army or the church of your choice.

Funeral services for Katherine E. Martens of Vichy, age 76, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00 the  church. Interment will be in the Macedonia Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Billy Don Stites of Steelville, age 73, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Ervin Franklin “Frankie” Piatt of Salem, age 64, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10:30 AM until service time. Interment will be in the Lone Pine-Piatt Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Piatt family for funeral expenses.

A memorial service for James Jenschke of Salem, age 87, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
