The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the Upper Elementary in the Library. After approval of the agenda, consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Cindy Rumpf reported that there had been no candidate filings to date. The deadline for candidate filings is January 18th at 5:00 pm. Rumpf informed the Board that Salem R-80 was honored with a plaque for its support of the city's recycling program by the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District. In new business, everyone in attendance moved to Mrs. Hagen's room for a Promethean demonstration, which are interactive white boards. There are three types of Promethean Boards and the original proposal was for 28 of the non-adjustable boards at $3,100 each with eight of those boards being at half price. It was proposed to the Board to purchase 50 of the boards, which would put one in each classroom at William Lynch and the Upper Elementary, ten at the high school and seven at the Junior High, for a total of $160,000. Most of the money for the boards would be paid from ARRA funds, which if not used by the end of the school year will go back to the state. After a very lengthy discussion, the Board tabled the matter and felt that more information regarding the ARRA funds and what can and can't be paid from them should be addressed. Although the eight at half price was just for the month of December, more information about those funds and what other school districts are doing with their ARRA funds was called for before a decision would be made. If the company assembles the boards, it costs an additional $500 more and the boards then come with a five year warranty. If the school bought all 50 at one time, they would save on shipping costs for one and they would also save money as they would be assembling the machines and the machines would then have a three-year warranty. The Board then approved the yearly MUSIC insurance renewal for $4,983 which is for their general liability insurance and also includes an umbrella for liability and cyber coverage. The Board approved a contract with Newton again for summer school next year and that is contingent on the fact that summer school is funded by the government, otherwise, the contract is void. The Board then set a tentative graduation date for Friday, May 20th. A Communication Committee has been formed and has acquired input of data from numerous sources regarding numerous issues. The Committee is looking for input regarding the future of Salem R-80 and beyond. Meetings are being planned for next year to gather insight as to what plans lie ahead for Salem R-80 from the Board, staff and the public. The Board then went into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel.
