The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the board approved the bid from Schwartz Sales for the approximately 4,280 pounds of coated scrap copper wire for $1.65 a pound that comes to $7,062. The board also approved the bid for 4,000 gallons of fuel for the airport from MFA Oil of Rolla for $3.00 a gallon. This is needed to pressure test the system and then have the pumps tested by state for accurate weights and measures. In the consent agenda, the sales tax revenue for the month of November was up $7,764 over last year and year to date the sales tax is up $1,155. Mayor Gary Brown said that a utility committee meeting would need to be held soon to discus the new proposed utility policy. He said that the city received a check from FEMA for $750, and they have two safety DVD’s for the city workers: one concerning bucket trucks and the other on the dangers of cell phone usage. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs showed the new banner that will display the Salem Sesquicentennial Celebration, and she said that 60 banners would be installed on utility poles about the sesquicentennial that will be paid for by the tourism tax. The costume ball will be held January 16^th at the city hall auditorium as the first event. The board approved Bill #3183 that authorizes the mayor to execute an agreement for task work between the City of Salem and C.M. Archer Group for the mapping of sanitation services in watershed #3 from Warfel Street East at an hourly rate, not to exceed a total of $94,500. The board also approved bill #3184 that allows the mayor to sign the lease/purchase agreement with Town and Country Bank for a truck, dump body, snow plow, two spreaders and a hoist. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4230, 5600 and 6280. Rock is going to be hauled to Dent County Roads 4230, 5140 and 5410 in District One, and work crews are stockpiling gravel for the winter months from both districts. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 4020 and 4437, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 2370. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Region I Homeland Security Review Committee meeting to review 24 grant applications for the $305,000 available for this area. He mentioned that Dent County’s grant application received preliminary approval for the additional $24,000 needed to complete the project for the Red Cross Emergency Shelter at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. It will then go before the entire Region I Homeland Oversight Committee for approval before being sent to the state for their approval. Skiles said that a total of 11 requests of the 24 submitted were recommended for funding. It was announced that the Dent County Courthouse would be closing at noon on Christmas Eve. At the last meeting, the commission received a request from G & D Communications from Sikeston for a Statement of Concurrence letter that Reynolds County Fire has been assigned the same radio frequency as Dent County and it is all right to keep that frequency. Commissioner Purcell moved to write a letter for this and the motion was approved by the commission. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

There were three winners in the 2009 Big Family Giveaway sponsored by South-Town Furniture, Fidelity Communications, Fairgrounds Auto Plaza and KSMO Radio. Each of the winners won a package of items valued at $2,000. David D. Snider won the giveaway by signing up at South-Town Furniture, Larry Hanger won the giveaway by signing up at Fidelity Communications and Vickie Adams signed up and won the merchandise giveaway at Fairgrounds Auto Plaza. The winner of the 2009 Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Home Decorating Contest is Kurt and Beverly Irons.  If you haven’t seen this amazing light display you will want to drive by and enjoy it before the Christmas Holiday is over.  The Irons home is located about two miles East of Salem on Highway 32 on the left side of the road. There were two homes that made the honorable mention list. Those were Artie & Jerry Schafer at 21 Westwood Drive and Kim Warden at 15 Westwood Drive. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those who took the time to call in and nominate their home or someone else’s home in this contest.

Jennifer Herndon’s basket as time expired gave the Salem Tigers a 32-30 win over Houston Monday night in SCA play. Herndon finished with seven points and Rachel Sirois scored six to lead the Tigers who are 5-3 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA Conference. Salem will be off until next Monday when they will participate in the Lebanon Tournament. The varsity will face Lebanon in the opening round on Monday at 11:30 at the Boswell Gym. The JV will also participate in the Lebanon Tournament and they will face Conway at 10:00 at the Carr Gym.

The Salem Boys basketball Tigers will face Rogers, Arkansas next Monday when they participate in the US Bank and Rolla High School Invitational Tournament. The game will be held at 5:30 at the Rolla High School Gym. If Salem wins, they would play at 7:00 on Tuesday; and if they lose, they will play at 4:00 on Tuesday.

Alex Steen had a goal and three assists as the St. Louis Blues clobbered the Edmonton Oilers, 7-2, at Rexall Place. Andy McDonald scored twice while Patrik Berglund and Brad Boyes each had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who have won their past two games. Chris Mason made 23 saves in the win. With the victory, the Blues snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Oilers. St. Louis continues its four-game road swing in Calgary on Wednesday at 8:30.
