The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson was not in attendance as he was out with the flu. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that conditions are too wet for grading, so most of District 2 would be catching up on routine maintenance. Tune said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 318 and a crew would be hauling rock to the crusher. Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that the county would open bids for grader blades on January 11 and she also wanted to remind everyone that the courthouse would be closed Monday in observance of Christmas. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their meeting Thursday night at the district administrative offices boardroom. In closed session before the regular meeting, the board hired Amanda Hargett as a Food Service worker for the Lower Elementary. The regular meeting began with a song performed by Mrs. Wisdom’s 5th grade class from the Upper Elementary. The board presented Mark Nash with a plaque for his ten years of service. The board approved the consent agenda which included the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting along with bills, the food service report, the attendance report and the substitute list. Superintendent Steve Bryant announced that Tiffany Land was the local MUSIC Scholarship nominee. Also, in honor of Stan Johnson, the board will purchase a brick on the “Wall of Fame” in Jefferson City on the new Missouri Association of School Administrators building. After a question and answer interview session with three candidates, the board voted to appoint Greg Nash to fulfill Mark Nash’s term on the Board of Education. Bob Parsons stopped by to discuss the FFA Chapter and to let the board know that the FFA Chapter will celebrate a 60th Anniversary next year. The board voted to renew the MUSIC Insurance with the rates having held steady. In resignations, the board accepted the retirement letter of Carol Dunlap to be effective June 30, 2007, accepted the retirement letter of Paul Dale effective February 1, 2007, and accepted the resignation of Ginger Joyner effective immediately due to personal reasons. The board is looking into and further discussion will occur in the spring, regarding drug testing for any student involved in extra-curricular activity. The board announced that Christy Crocker has been appointed as the Elementary Principal effective January 2, 2007. Don Smith has been appointed in the interim to replace Crocker at her current position for the rest of this year, and the board will begin the process of looking for a full time replacement for the 2007-2008 school year. The board then went in to closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline.
An accident happened in Dent County on Thursday around 5:35 in the evening on Rt. H just west of Lenox. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Ford Ranger driven by 51-year old Stephen Cochran of Lenox, swerved to avoid a deer. His vehicle then ran off the road, struck a utility pole, and overturned. Cochran suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital then airlifted to the University Hospital in Columbia. His vehicle was totaled in the accident and was left at the scene. Cochran was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The City of Salem Winter Youth Basketball Program is just around the corner. Sign-ups will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. All sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center, formerly the National Guard Armory. This will be the LAST sign-up for the Winter Basketball Program. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently enrolled in the 1st through the 6th grade. The cost is $15 per child. For any additional information, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 729-6290.
Lee Stempniak and Barrett Jackman each had a goal and an assist, and the St. Louis Blues defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 5-2, at the Scottrade Center to give new head coach Andy Murray just his second win behind the bench at the expense of his former club. Murray coached the Kings for five-plus seasons before being fired with just 12 games remaining in the 2005-2006 season. David Backes scored his first career NHL goal and Martin Rucinsky and Jay McClement also tallied for the Blues, who have won two in a row following an 11-game slide. Manny Legace made 23 saves for St. Louis who snapped a seven-game losing streak at home. The Blues will be home to face the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night starting at 7:00 and you can hear that game on KSMO.

In possibly his last game at Lambeau Field, Brett Favre threw for 285 yards on 26-of-50 passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions as the Green Bay Packers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 9-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Favre, who started his 236th straight game, became the first quarterback in NFL history with 5,000 completions with a fourth-quarter pass.

Funeral services for Barbara Clendenin of Steelville, age 100, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville.
A Memorial service for Teresa Lynn Phillips of Springfield, formerly of Salem, age 28, will be held Saturday, December 23rd at 9:00 at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Springfield. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Frances Thomas of Bunker, age 74, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be Corridon-Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Funeral services for Jack Ervin Grayson of Newburg, age 74, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Garden in Rolla.
