The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that on Dent County Road 4150, a driveway culvert was to be installed, rock was to be hauled and grading was to be done. Grading was also going to be done on Dent County Road 5600 and rock was going to be hauled to Dent County Roads 5410 and 5670. He said that brush was to be cut on Dent County Road 2440. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was schedule to be done on Dent County Roads 2135, 4020, 5300 and 5310. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Community Foundation of the Ozarks would be willing to partner with the MRPC to set up a regional foundation to help small schools with contributions to the schools. Skiles attended the Region I Homeland Security meeting to review grant applications. Skiles said that $804,000 has been requested, but there is only $305,123.20 available. He said that Dent County has four grant applications submitted: One by the Dent County Commission for the additional $24,000 for the generator for the Oak Grove Baptist Church to act as a Red Cross Emergency Shelter, one for $30,000 by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department for radio repeaters for the patrol cars, one for $25,000 by the Montauk Rural Fire Department for new radios, and $21,318, and one for the oak Hill R-1 School for a generator to act as an emergency shelter. That totals $100,318 requested from Dent County alone. Skiles cannot review or vote on any grant application from Dent County. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held this morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting, a mental commitment, and theft. On Saturday, December 12th, at 6:38 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 40 year-old female of Salem for stealing merchandise. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, December 15th at 5:00 p.m. an officer served a mental commitment order to a 43 year-old male of Springfield. He was transported to Ozark Medical Center in West Plains, where he was released to their care. On Wednesday, December 16th at 1:48 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to cable theft. Investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 33 year-old male and a 25 year-old female, both of Salem, for stealing utilities. An accident occurred at 5:15 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 68 three miles north of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol Report, a 1998 GMC Jimmy driven by 29-year-old Christopher Weatherly of Rolla, was traveling north on Highway 68. The accident occurred as the vehicle lost control on the ce-covered roadway, ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Weatherly suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Weatherly was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their next regular meeting starting at 7:00 tonight in the City Hall Council Chambers. The board will discuss bids for the sale of 4,280 pounds of scrap coated copper wire and also fuel at the airport. After the consent agenda, the board will hear concerns from all the aldermen and Mayor Gary Brown will also give his comments. The board will then discuss bill #3183 which is an ordinance authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement on task work, authorization #6, between the City of Salem and C.M. Archer Group for professional consulting services; and discuss bill #3184 which is an ordinance authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement for the lease and purchase of a truck, dump body, two spreader boxes and a snow plow. After the bills are approved the meeting will be adjourned. The regular meeting of the Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers beat the Newburg Lady Wolves Friday night by the score of 45-32. Jennifer Herndon led the way for Salem with 11 points followed by Kristy Bermudez with nine points. Salem will begin their SCA conference schedule tonight as they travel to Houston to face the Tigers starting at 6:0 with the JV game. The varsity game will follow.

The Potosi Trojans outscored Salem 18-8 in the second quarter to break open a close game and the Tigers could never recover, losing 62-42. Salem was led in scoring by Jonathan Hambacker with 15 points and seven rebounds. Salem is now 1-5 on the year and will be off until the Rolla Tournament on December 28th.

Four different Missouri Tigers netted double figures as Missouri beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 88-70. Kim English led the way with 18 points followed by Mike Dixon, Jr. with 13 points, Laurence Bowers scored 12 points and Keith Ramsey netted 10 more. Missouri is 7-3 on the year and will taking on Illinois Wednesday night at the Scottrade Center starting at 8:00 on KSMO.

David Backes had a pair of goals and Keith Tkachuk also scored as St. Louis beat Vancouver, 3-1, at General Motors Place. Ty Conklin stopped 29 shots for the Blues, who started their four-game road trip by sending the Canucks to just their sixth home loss of the season (14-6). The Blues will be in Edmonton tonight to face the Oilers starting at 8:00 on KSMO Radio.

Jerome Harrison scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute, and Josh Cribbs had two kickoff return touchdowns to set an NFL record, as Cleveland beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 41-34, in a shootout at Arrowhead Stadium. Jamaal Charles led the Chiefs (3-11) attack with 154 rushing yards and a score on 25 carries. Matt Cassel completed 22-of-40 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns for an offense that garnered 491 total yards in defeat.

Kris Brown kicked three field goals, including a 28-yarder with 4:36 left in the fourth quarter, as the Houston Texans held on for a 16-13 win over the St. Louis Rams at Edward Jones Dome. Steven Jackson rushed for 82 yards on 20 touches and pulled in four catches for 41 yards for the Rams who are 1-13 on the year. Rookie Keith Null started at quarterback for the Rams and threw for 173 yards on 18-of-27 efficiency with a touchdown and an interception.

Funeral services for Ethel M. Pettus formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for June Stone (Ogden) of Holts Summit, age 75, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Special Olympics in St. Joseph, MO.

Funeral services for Nancy Allmon of Brackettville, Texas, age 59, will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Pine Lawn Cemetery at Winona.

Funeral services for Christopher Higgs of Salem, age 31, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be private. Memorials are suggested to the Higgs Family.

Funeral services for Bernard W. Winkle of St. James, age 79, will be held onn Tuesday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the High Gate Baptist Cemetery in High Gate, Missouri. Full military honors will be held at the cemetery.
