The Missouri Development Finance Board has made available, effective immediately, 50% tax credits to individuals and businesses who contribute toward the renovation of the former US Bank building, which has been purchased by the Salem Public Library. Any contributions of $250 or more dated through December 31, 2013, will be eligible for these tax credits this year. Contributions after January 1, 2014, will apply to next year. $200,000 worth of tax credits were awarded to our library to help create a facility that will serve the citizens of the Salem community for this and future generations. The bank building was purchased in full with donor gifts, no tax dollars used. Much work has already been done such as new high-efficiency furnaces, roof repair, mold removal, lock box removal and plumbing repairs. Completion of this project will give our library much-needed space for books, additional technology, and storage as well as increased workspace for staff. This will be a beautiful structure that will enhance our downtown area and eliminate another empty structure. All contributions are appreciated and will be used only for this renovation project. The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting this Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse.  Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the CART and Forest Cropland receipt updates. The year-to-date CART receipts are $620,168.85 and are up by $5,964.08 when compared to last year’s total of $614,204.77. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the increase was nearly one percent. Williams also indicated that the Forest Cropland receipts for the year were $11,107.68, which is a decrease from the $11,407.68 received in 2012. The payment is to compensate the county for reduced taxes from private and state owned acres enrolled in the Forest Cropland Program. The Commissioners agreed that the decrease was probably due acres that were withdrawn from the program. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that crews were checking hills that habitually have slick spots and are slow to melt away, truck #117 was being serviced, and that workers were cleaning and washing salt from equipment. Purcell added that he had a crew going to Dent County road 6190 to clear an obstruction from a culvert. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said a crew was checking for slick spots on the roads to the Mounce Cemetery in preparation for a funeral. Larson also said he had a crew adding speed limit signs to Dent County Road 6150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended meeting of the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency held Tuesday evening in Winona. The major item was the approval of $4.472 million dollars for the Headstart Funding for 2014, which is the same amount as was awarded in 2013. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley presented for review and signing the Cooperative Agreement for Reimbursement for Child Support Services. Curley said her office was continuing to work on the 2014 budget and year end reports. She presented the phone bids for propane for the Courthouse. They were Amerigas/Titan at $1.99, Chilton Oil at $2.20 and MFA Oil at $1.97. The Commissioners approved the MFA Oil bid. Curt Faigle of the 100-Acre Wood Rally was in to discuss the February 21st and 22nd rally. Faigle said the routes were similar to last years, but there are some possible changes pending contacts with residents along the roadways that the Rally would like to add.  He will be emailing maps of the stages to Commissioners Purcell and Larson. Salem Library Board representative Ruth Ann Parker was in to update the Commission.  Parker said that on Tuesday they had received notification that the tax credit application for $422,000 that was submitted had been approved for $400,000. The tax credits are available immediately and the forms may be obtained at the Salem Public Library or from Library Board Members. Parker went on to say that any contribution of $250 or more is tax deductible and can be carried forward for up to 5 years. The Commissioners then voted to pay the bills.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and it is open to the public.

The West Plains Zizzers outscored the Salem Tigers in the first quarter by a 22-9 margin, then never relinquished at least a ten point lead as they defeated the Tigers, 63-49. Logan Pogue led all scorers for Salem with 14 points as Salem falls to 1-2 on the year. The Tigers will be at Potosi tonight to face the Trojans starting with the JV contest at 6:00 followed by the varsity game. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com. 

The Newburg Lady Wolves topped the Salem Lady Tigers on Thursday, 60-45. Savannah Hanning scored 15 for Salem while Cortney Putman and Kari Hartridge each added 9 points. The Lady Tigers will next play in the Lebanon Tournament, which starts on December 26th.

Alexander Steen lit the lamp twice and T.J. Oshie had two assists as the St. Louis Blues cruised past the Montreal Canadiens, 5-1. The Blues will be in Edmonton to play the Oilers on Saturday and you can hear it on KSMO at 8:30.

The 23rd ranked Missouri Tiger basketball team will play Illinois on Saturday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Missouri is 10-0 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 4:00.

The St. Louis Rams will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, and the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Indianapolis Colts. The Rams are 6-8 on the year while the Chiefs are 11-3 and tied for the lead in the AFC West. Both games are set for kickoff at noon.

Missouri Tiger defensive end Michael Sam has been named to the Associated Press All-American Team, which along with his Walter Camp and Sporting News honors makes him Mizzou’s 12th Consensous All-American. Sam was also named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the year, along side Alabama LB C.J. Mosley.

Funeral services for Wilbur McCarter of Salem, age 81, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time at the mortuary. Interment will be in  the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Adam Shawn Akins of Salem, age 34, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Round Pond Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Akins Family.

Funeral services for Tucker Lee Rutledge of Boss, age 4 months, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church in Boss. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for JoAnn Stewart of Salem, age 71, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.

Funeral services for Virginia Shults of Salem, age 86, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Graveside services for Helen Irene Boren of St. James will be Thursday, December 26th, at the Gorman Cemetery in St. James. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
