Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, the commanding officer of Troop I, announced the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Dent County on Friday, December 14th on Highway 19, near the roadside park in Salem.  Also present and assisting were officers from the Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. During the course of the night, officers stopped 176 vehicles.  During the checkpoint, there was one DWI arrest, 22 seat belt violations, two child restraint violations, one hazardous moving violations, seven non-moving traffic offenses, one driver’s license violations, five uninsured motorists violations, and one felony warrant arrest.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their December meeting this afternoon at the District Administrative Boardroom beginning at 5:30 pm. After approval of the agenda, consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will update the Board on the candidate filings, followed by reports from the principals at William Lynch, Upper Elementary, as well as the Salem JR and SR High Schools. In new business, the Board will discuss Fisher Tracks, Summer School for 2013, MSIP 5, a Co- Op Junior High Track program and the MUSIC renewal. The Board will also discuss a resolution to approve the Library deed, the selection of the MSBA Belcher Scholarship recipient and bids on cameras. The board will review and then approve ballot language for the April 2013 election. The Board will then vote to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The December meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Salvation Army Service Unit of Dent County would like to announce that this year’s Christmas kettle campaign would continue to run through Monday, December 24th. The kettles are located at Wal-Mart, Country Mart and Dollar General. Counter Kettles have been placed at various locations around Dent County. This year’s goal is $20,000. The Salvation Army is hopeful that local citizens will support this campaign generously as they have in the past. The Salvation Army will continue its dedication to doing the most good not only during the holiday season, but year round. The funds raised during this campaign will be used to assist the citizens of Dent County with utility assistance, and prescriptions. The Salvation Army also supplies local school children with backpacks, and provides assistance to families who have lost everything due to a fire. The generosity of the citizens will enable the local Salvation Army to continue to meet the needs of those who need assistance in 2013.

The Salem Police Department has released several reports. On Saturday, December 8th at 10:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The investigation revealed that someone forged seven checks of another totaling $400. That afternoon at 1:59, an officer was sent to Casey’s General Store on Highway 19 in reference to theft of fuel. That investigation revealed the driver of a maroon Ford Escort pumped $39.71 in fuel and left without paying. That night at 9:09, officers of the Salem Police Department assisted by the Dent County Sheriffs Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol, conducted a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of South Jackson. As a result of the search, a 42-year old Salem male was arrested for distribution of a controlled substance near a school and possession of cocaine. Also arrested was a 22-year old Salem male for distribution of a controlled substance near a school. Both were incarcerated pending the application of warrants. On Sunday, December 9th at 3:24 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of East Hunt in reference to loose dog chasing children. The investigation revealed the owner of the dog, a 49-year old Salem female, had not properly maintained the dog. She was arrested of the suspect for animal abuse, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. On Thursday, December 13th at 5:40 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage to a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown did damage to the hood of a blue 2004 Ford Escape. The value of the damage is approximately $300.00. Anyone with any info regarding the theft of fuel, forgery or damage to vehicle reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host the Licking Wildcats tonight in their homecoming game. The JV will start things at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. Congratulations to the 2012 Basketball Homecoming Court, which includes Senior Queen Candidates Chandler Parks, Becky Watts, and Sammy White. The Junior Attendant is Cheyenne Moore and the Sophomore Attendant is Savannah Hanning. Salem has a 2-4 record on the year. Funeral services for Leonard Cornick of St. James, age 99, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the St. James Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James, Missouri.

Funeral services for Phyllis Ann Turner of Salem, age 56, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening at the Salem Chapel of the Wilson Mortuary. Interment will be the Jane Callahan Cemetery in Reynolds County. Memorials may be made to the Turner Family.

Funeral services for Wilma Wilkinson of Cherryville, age 90, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Center Ridge Pentecostal Church in Davisville. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 until 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to Center Ridge Pentecostal Church.

Funeral services for John J. Gilbert of St. Louis, formerly St. James, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:30 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James, Missouri.

Funeral services for Dennis W. Jercick of St. James, age 59, will be held Saturday at 12:00 noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary St. James Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 in the morning until service time at noon.

LeRoy Edwin Dovin of Salem, age 93, wishes were to be cremated and interment will be held at the Cedar Grove Cemetery at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Private memorial services and interment for Loma T. Love of Salem, formerly of Chandler, Arizona, age 86, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Three Rivers Hospice.  All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
