Associate Circuit Court Judge Sandy Ball of Salem, has been appointed by Governor Jay Nixon to fill the position of Circuit Judge for the 42nd Circuit, which includes Dent, Crawford, Iron, Reynolds and Wayne counties. The appointment occurred on December 15th and will go into effect as soon as Ball can be sworn in. The position became available when William Camm Seay resigned from the seat in November after he was elected to the Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney position. Ball has served as the Associate Court Judge since 2000. The Associate Circuit Court judge position is now vacant and the governor will have to make another appointment to fill that position.

An accident happened Sunday afternoon in Dent County on Dent County Road 2300 about four miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Chevy Malibu driven eastbound by 60-year old Ruth E. Warren of Salem, went out of control on the gravel roadway, and slid off the right side of the roadway into a ditch. Warren suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. Warren was wearing her seat restraint at the time of the accident. The vehicle sustained moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 at the City Hall Council Chambers. After roll call and approval of the consent agenda, Jeanette Russell and Cindy Stluka, co-chairs of Relay for Life, will request the use of the City Park again for the event. The date for the Relay for Life is set for June 17th, 2011, and they would like to use the park from 8:00 that morning until noon the next day. They are also requesting no ball games be scheduled on the fields adjourning the park due to parking problems. In unfinished business, Cozumel will be requesting a permanent liquor license. Mayor Gary Brown will give the public works report and the Aldermen will then give their reports. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Bill number 3211 and Resolution number 5-2010 for approval. Bill number 3211 is an ordinance required to establish a time limit on the parking lot west and south of the intersection of Highway 19 and 3rd Street behind the City Hall Auditorium. Resolution number 5-2010 that authorizes the Mayor to execute an agreement for the lease and purchase of a 2010 Ford Explorer from Heavin Motors. The Board will then go into closed session. The meeting is open to the public

The Salem Police Department released some reports. On Friday, December 10th at 5:45 p.m. an officer was detailed to BP Convenience Station in reference to a leave without pay for fuel. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown driving a blue four-door vehicle pumped $20.00 in fuel and the left without paying. On Sunday morning, December 12th at 12:18, an officer was dispatched to the Walnut Bowl Motel parking lot in reference to a man making threats with a knife. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 35-year old male of Tsaile, Arizona for assault with a knife and unlawful use of a weapon. He was incarcerated pending the application of warrants. At 5:41 that evening, an officer responded to the Salem Apartments in the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to damage to a Coke machine. The investigation of the report revealed that a person of persons unknown damaged a Coke machine to open it and then took an unknown amount of change from the machine. The damage to the machine is approximately $800.00. On Tuesday morning, December 14th at 11:00, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a motion valve valued at $1,025.95 from a 2005 Dodge truck that was parked in the 1400 block of Highway 32 West.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers got their first win of the year as they beat Newburg, 59-54 Friday night. Jennifer Herndon netted 22 points to lead all scorers while Kristy Bermudez added 13 more. Salem is 1-5 on the year and they will be at Ava tonight in SCA play starting at 6:00.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tiger game with Potosi was postponed Friday night. They will be off until the Rolla Holiday Tournament that starts on Monday, December 27th.

Marcus Denmon led seven Missouri players in double figures with 21 points, as the 13th-ranked Tigers blew out Central Arkansas, 116-63, for their fifth straight win. Laurence Bowers added 20 points for the Tigers (10-1), who also received 18 points from Ricardo Ratliffe. Phil Pressey contributed 15 points and 11 assists, while Kim English had 14 points and 10 helpers. Missouri will face Illinois Wednesday night.

Logan Couture scored two goals, Antero Niittymaki made 21 saves and the San Jose Sharks earned a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. David Backes scored the only St. Louis goal on a penalty shot in the second period, and the Blues lost for the third time in four games. The Blues fell to 10-3-2 this season at Scottrade Center and will host the Vancouver Canucks tonight starting at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Matt Cassel completed 15-of-29 for 184 yards and a touchdown in his return to the lineup to guide Kansas City to a 27-13 triumph over St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome. Jamal Charles ran 11 times for 126 yards and a score for the Chiefs (9-5), who maintained their one-game lead over San Diego in the AFC West. Sam Bradford connected on 21-of-43 throws for 181 yards. The Rams (6-8) held on to their share of the lead in the NFC West after Seattle fell at home Atlanta.

The Milwaukee Brewers bolstered their starting rotation in a big way on Sunday, acquiring former Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke from the Kansas City Royals. The Royals sent the 27-year-old ace to the Brewers in exchange for outfielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar and minor- league pitchers Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Odorizzi. Milwaukee also receives shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and cash in the deal.

Funeral services for Dudley Johns of Columbia formerly of Salem, age 83, will be held today at 10:30 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the SBU Salem Campus.

Funeral services for Harold E Harston, Jr. of Salem, age 84, will be held today at 11:00 at the Ozark Highland Christian Church in Rolla. A Masonic Service will be held at 5:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Rolla Cemetery in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Ruth R. Curtis of Rolla, age 87, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God of Rolla.

Funeral services for Helen Hawkins of Rolla, age 79, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Assembly of God in Rolla.

Funeral services for Helen Elizabeth Harman of Linn Creek, formerly of Steelville, age 80, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Graveside services for Henry ‘Hank’ McGauly of Steelville, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Steelville Cemetery. All arrangements under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Memorial services for DeWayne Carl Arthur of Salem, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 at the Wilson Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Salem Pentecostal Church.
