Scenic Rivers Industries, also known as the Dent County Sheltered Workshop of Salem, was recognized for its recycling efforts during the annual meeting of the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District on November 27th. The Sheltered Workshop received one of seven awards, recognizing recycling and waste reduction efforts benefiting the Ozark Rivers Region. Each year, the Ozark Rivers District recognizes companies and individuals that are helping the district meet its 40-percent reduction goal and to showcase them as models for others to follow. Since 2005, Scenic Rivers Industries has collected 1.1 million pounds of cardboard and 377,695 pounds of paper products for recycling. The material is then transported to the workshop facility to be baled and shipped for further processing. Scenic Rivers also collects empty paper feeds sacks and cardboard boxes, dropped off at the MFA Agri-Services in Salem. While some of the empty paper feed sacks and cardboard boxes are a result from MFA¹s operations, area farmers have made MFA a drop-off for feed sack recycling. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles nominated Scenic Rivers Industries for their outstanding contribution in solid waste management in the Salem/Dent County area, especially in the area of waste paper recycling. Others honored this year were: Flying J Travel Plaza of Sullivan; Wal-Mart Distribution Center 6069 of St. James; Don Meyr of Cuba; Resource Recovery of Cuba; Ed and Susan Albee of Salem; and Cub Scout Pack 429 of Bourbon. The Ozark Rivers District includes Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities with populations of 500 or more.
