The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the 2006 Christmas Parade entitled, “Let It Snow”. The winner of the commercial category was WW Construction and the runner-up was US Foodservice. The winner of the non-commercial category was the Salem Girl Scouts and the runner-up was the Oak Grove Baptist Church. The 1st place winners will receive $100 and the runner-ups will receive $50. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to say a special thank you to everyone who participated in the parade as well as those who came out to watch.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for December 11th through the 15th involving a burglary, theft, juveniles and counterfeiting. On December 11th at 11:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a storage unit at 1300 West International, took numerous items and left the remaining contents in disarray. The listing and value of the items missing has not yet been determined and the report is still under investigation. Later the same evening at 9:00, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to the theft of license plates off of a green 1995 GMC truck. The plates are valued at $55 and the report is under investigation. On December 12th at 1:08 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem Jr. High School in reference to disorderly conduct. The report revealed that a 16-year old female had assaulted another student. She was detained and released to her parent. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. On December 13th at 3:20 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to the Wal-Mart Super Center in reference to a counterfeit $20 bill, passed by an unknown person. The report is under investigation. On December 15th at 1:27 in the afternoon, an officer responded to a report of drugs at the Salem High School. The report revealed a 17-year old Salem female was in possession of methamphetamine. She was arrested and incarcerated pending the application of a warrant. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, theft or counterfeiting, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce would like to remind everyone to enter your home in the 2006 Christmas Decorating Contest. To enter your home or someone else’s home, pick up an entry form at the Chamber office at 200 South Main Street, or you can call the entry in at 729-6900. You can even fax your entry to the Chamber office at 729-6741. Entry forms must contain the homeowners name, their phone number and good directions to the decorated site. The deadline to enter is today!!! A $50 prize will be awarded to the “Best Overall” entry, and also to the runner up. The winners will be judged by out of town judges. An accident occurred Thursday afternoon at 2:22 at the intersection of South Pershing and Gibbs. According to the Salem Police report, a red 1994 Chevy Blazer driven by Ronald Jesse Settles of Licking was traveling southbound on Pershing approaching Gibbs. The Chevy Blazer lost control, veered left crossing the road making contact with the curb, then continued southeast making contact with the city of Salem pole, street signs and continued crossing Gibbs and made contact with a metal fence and pole in a yard of the 700 block of South Pershing. The Chevy Blazer then made contact with a parked and unoccupied pickup truck before coming to a final rest position. No injuries were reported. The Chevy Blazer sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem. The parked pickup sustained moderate damage. The fence and landscaping sustained extensive damage and the pole and street signs sustained extensive damage. Investigation of this accident led to the arrest of Settles for driving while intoxicated and he was on a fugitive warrant from Texas County. He was incarcerated on the Texas County warrant and the pending application of a warrant for a DWI.
The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will be closed on Friday, December 22nd for the beginning of Christmas break. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007.

The West Plains Zizzers outscored Salem, 20-8 in the fourth quarter, and emerged with a 61 to 46 win over the Salem Tigers last night at the West Plains Civic Center. Salem was led by Taylor Sirois with 20 points and nine rebounds. Salem will be back in action in a make up game Thursday night at and against Farmington starting at 5:30 in the high school gym. Due to prior commitments that evening, KSMO will not be broadcasting that game.
Shaun Pruitt tallied a career-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds as his Illinois Fighting Illini held on a for a 73-70 victory over the Missouri Tigers in a non-conference clash. Stefhon Hannah poured in 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field for Missouri (9-2). Missouri led 38-35 at intermission after shooting 51.9 percent from the floor in the first half, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. The score remained close throughout the second half, and nine points from the foul line over the final 20 minutes certainly contributed to the win for the Illini. Illinois earned a 39-31 rebounding advantage in the clash, including a 17-9 edge on the offensive boards. Missouri will be off until December 30th when they play Southern.
Dan Hinote and Doug Weight each had a goal and an assist to help the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Mellon Arena. Bill Guerin and Ryan Johnson each added a goal for the Blues, who stopped an 11-game losing streak and got head coach Andy Murray his first win as the club's head coach. Manny Legace started in net for St. Louis and stopped nine shots in the first period, but was forced to exit with flu-like symptoms. Jason Bacashihua took over netminding duties at the start of the second period and made 16 saves on 17 shots. St. Louis plays the Kings at home on Thursday night at 7:00 and you can hear that game on KSMO.

A Memorial service for Teresa Lynn Phillips of Springfield, formerly of Salem, age 28, will be held Saturday, December 23rd at 9:00 at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Springfield. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
