The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, Commissioner Bobby Simpson said that workers in District 1 were checking the roads in the area for slick spots, took care of some downed limbs, and are doing maintenance on the equipment. Commissioner J.J. Tune said that the District 2 workers had salted some icy areas as they were checking the roads, were doing sign repair and replacement, performing maintenance on the trucks and doing some bush-hogging on the Commons Road. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that at the Region I Homeland Security grant meeting held last Tuesday that the grant for the stand-by generator for the emergency Red Cross shelter in Dent County had received first round approval for the entire amount of $46,003. The shelter would be at the Oak Grove Baptist Church building. Skiles said that the project had great support in the grant application prepared by Tony Floyd as well as from Jim Paisley from SEMA. The grant will now go in front of the board for final approval. Skiles also received a call from Judy Allen from Bunker that they have received preliminary approval of their Community Development Block Grant for their new firehouse. She was calling to confirm the in-kind assistance that the county was to provide if they received the grant. The commission also approved to pay the county’s portion of taxes on the Parker-Weaver building that was purchased by the county for additional space this past year. At the last meeting, Recorder of Deeds Cindy Ard came in to discuss changing companies for her recording equipment. She feels that Lason has not upheld their maintenance contract and is requesting to change to another company, CSA. The commission approved her request. Ray Walden from the Salem TCRC came in to discuss the 2009 Rural Addressing contract with the county. The commission decided to wait until the newly elected commissioners take over to finalize that contract. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
Senator Frank Barnitz announced that the Flat Nasty Off-Road Park Trail project in Jadwin has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This project is one of 17 that received funding through the department’s Recreational Trails Program, funded by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The Recreational Trails Program grants are used for motorized and non-motorized trail development or renovation and preservation. Projects require a minimum match of 20 percent, and all projects must be maintained for a period of 25 years. Flat Nasty Off-Road Park, near Salem, contains a series of trails for ATV’s, 4x4’s, and other off-road vehicles. The trails range from easy to very difficult and utilize the often hilly and rock Ozark terrain for the enjoyment of riders.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will once again collect food for the 2nd Annual Christmas Food Drive. They will be collecting food donations, monetary donations or gift card donations from businesses, organizations or individuals. These families are chosen based on need and are located by the Chamber working in conjunction with local organizations such as the Salvation Army. The Dent County Schools, Salem R-80, Oak Hill R-I, Green Forest R-II, Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV will all be closed for Christmas break, which will begin Monday, December 22nd. Classes will resume on Monday, January 5th.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will face Potosi tonight at the SHS Gym starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity game starting at about 7:20. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio at about 7:10 with Tiger Talk and Coach Phillip Karr. Salem is 2-3 going into the game.
The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will host Newburg tonight at the Upper Elementary Gymnasium with the JV starting at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow.
Viktor Kozlov posted two goals and an assist, as the Washington Capitals remained dominant on home ice with a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. David Backes and Brad Winchester scored for the Blues, who have now dropped five straight. Ben Bishop suffered his first loss of the season by allowing four goals on 29 shots. The Blues will host Minnesota Saturday night.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers will face Stetson tomorrow at 5:30. Missouri enters the game with an 8-1 record.
The Missouri Tigers will face Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl on December 29th starting at 7:00.

Funeral services for Windell “Salty” Bryan of Steelville, age 84, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pinnell Cemetery in Steelville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Ksenia Bryan Scholarship Fund at the Phelps County Bank or the Pinnell Cemetery.
Funeral services for Robert K. “Bob” Reed of Licking age 86 will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Boone Creek Baptist Church with Dr. James Miller officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sunshine Rainbow Day School.
Funeral services for Edith H. Pauley of St. James, age 72, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Lupus Foundation.
Memorial services for Linda Frances Inman of Salem, age 54, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Pentecostal Church of God. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for Ruth P. Wilmurth of St. James, age 96, will be held Monday at 10:00 at the First Baptist Church in St. James. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in St. James.
Funeral services for Ada L. Boles of Salem, age 84 will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Funeral services for Helen M. King of Rolla, age 87, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Doolittle. Memorials may be made to the First Assmebly of God in Rolla or the Rolla Presbyterian Manor.
A private interment for Daisy B. Johnson of Salem will be held at a later date. She passed away on December 19th at the age of 76.
