The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading is still continuing on various roads between Routes B and N and grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 641 and 642. Simpson also said that gravel would be hauled to various roads throughout District 1. Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 314 and 406. Tune also said that a crew would be hauling rock to the crusher and weather permitting grading regular routes throughout District 2. Dent County Clerk Janet Inman reported that all three Commissioners voted to close the courthouse Friday, December 22nd at 12:00 in observance of Christmas Eve.  At the previous meeting the Commissioners signed a letter to close six inactive accounts at the Bank of Salem. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting in the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board approved the purchase of a laptop computer for the electric department for $1,457 from Automated Business Systems for purchasing and transmitting data to Sho-Me Power. They also approved the purchase of three scoreboards from VPI of Memphis, Tennessee, for $8,419 to comply with the grant to finish the Salem Freedom Activity Center fields. The scoreboards were to be provided by Coca-Cola in the original grant application, but they have since rescinded that agreement. Locally, the Bank of Salem has already agreed to purchase one of the scoreboards reducing the city’s cost to $5,612.67. Other institutions have been asked but have not yet got back to the city with their decision. The board approved the refinishing of a bay floor to remove the pits in the concrete in the Maintenance Shop from Designer Concrete for $1,400. Mayor Gary Brown reported that the emergency generator needs to be run and checked by Advanced Electrical Systems and that will be done after the first of the year. He said that city received a check for about $870 from St. James for the assistance provided by the city after the tornado hit there this summer. He also said that a check from Sho-Me Power for $36,800 was received and deposited in the electrical reserve. Brown said that the water tower by the electric shop had been flushed and inspected and a report will come on that next week. He said that the water and sewer department has been checking problem sewer lines and they are finding grease in many of  them. Please refrain from putting grease down your sink as that can cause a blockage in the sewer line, especially if there are roots in the system. Mayor Brown reported that John Lester with the Missouri Public Utility Alliance would be at the next board meeting on January 2nd with the instructor of the electrical apprentice program to answer any questions. He said that a seminar will be held in Jefferson City on January 9th concerning ethics in government and he and City Clerk Mary Happel will be in attendance. He also reported that Rally America will hold their Trespassers Wil rally on February 23 and 24th and the event will be televised by ESPN 2. The board approved Bill #3088 to vacate a portion of Beezley Street located in the Fourth Addition of Brandon Heights, but retain easement rights. They denied taking out Terrorism Insurance, and approved City Clerk Mary Happel attending the city clerk’s regional meeting in Overland Park, Kansas covering three nights hotel stay at $89 per night and the registration fee of $110. There were no bills to approve and the board moved into closed session to discuss real estate and personnel.

They still have eight-inch single stem plants available for just $8.00, and they have the three-stem plants for $15. The colors are red, white and pink. Stop by today between 8:00 and 4:00 or call the Ag-Ed Department at 729-3620. All money collected for the poinsettias stays with the Salem FFA.

Funeral services for Carol McCall Stephens Headrick of Salem, age 84, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the McCall Family Plot in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with an 84-ballon salute. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or Leukemia Society of America.

Funeral services for Ella Lou Scott of Viburnum, age 68, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Strang Funeral Home in Antioch, Illinois. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Grand Cemetery in Ingelside, Illinois. Local arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
