The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Mayor Gary Brown reported that Anderson Seay has decided to withdraw his previous request to limit the use of the church bells at the Sacred Heart Church. City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported that he has received three bids for the sale of old utility poles. The board accepted the high bid from Bill Jadwin for $385. Lucas reported that an Employee Insurance Update meeting was recently held and that bids for insurance quotes will be let in January with a ninety-day response time. There will be employee Discrimination and Harassment training on January 22nd at SBU. Lucas reported that the current K9 vehicle would need to be replaced soon. He will look at prices for new vehicles and used Highway Patrol vehicles. Funds would need to be transferred from the Capital Improvement Fund to pay for the vehicle, as Lucas will bring more information to the next meeting. He said that a meeting will be held with Sullivan Publications to discuss the recent ordinance codification revisions on January 14 at 6:15 PM, and there will also be a workshop on January 28th at 6:15 PM to discuss storm water Improvements and other issues of importance to the city. Alderman Kenneth Nash asked about the red light on the water tower that is supposed to blink. Mayor Brown explained that the tower is not over 200 feet so the light does not have to blink and it is in full FAA compliance. Alderman Philip Giacomelli reported he received complaints of old non-licensed vehicles located at Elmer and Acuff Streets. He also received concerns from residents located near the house on McArthur that has been approved for demolition, indicating that it is unsecure and a safety hazard. He was also told that items are missing from the shed that was not part of the demolition bid. City Attorney Camm Seay said that the police are checking into it. Mayor Brown reported that the Salem Fitness Center had 1,289 people use the facility in November and the Salem TCRC had 1,467. Brown, Powell and Giacomelli thanked and congratulated Sherry Lea and the Healthy Dent County Board for successfully raising nearly $500,000 in their recent Capital Campaign to renovate the old Armory into the Salem Community Center. Brown also reported that Healthy Dent County recently received a DNR grant for $100,000 to build a hiking/biking trail around the Salem Upper Elementary School.  Brown wanted to remind the citizens to keep the Randell family in their prayers with the recent passing of Jerry. The board approved Resolution 28-2012 authorizing the Mayor to sign the completion documentation closing out the agreement with Crossroads Redevelopment Corporation. They also approved Resolution 29-2012 authorizing the Mayor to sign the certificate of adopting the City of Salem 457 Deferred Compensation Plan 612875. With no other business at hand, the Salem Board of Aldermen then went into closed session to discuss litigation.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for the beginning of December. On Saturday, December 1st at 7:57 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Franklin in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence by force and took items valued at $400. On Sunday, December 2nd at 2:33 in the early morning, an officer made contact with a 25-year old Salem male who had an active fugitive warrant from Texas County near Fourth and Iron Streets. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition. That afternoon at 3:16, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $12. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, December 4th at 8:30 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third in reference to an illegal utility hookup. The investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, December 5th at 7:58 in the evening, an officer responded to a residence in the 400 block of South Washington in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation revealed that a 15-year old male juvenile of Salem, had assaulted a 35-year old female of Salem. Further investigation led to the detention of the juvenile, who was released to his mother. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for further review. Then on Saturday, December 8th at 10:12 that morning, an officer made contact with a 27-year old Salem female, through the course of a drug investigation. It was found the female was in possession of a controlled substance. An application for a warrant will be made pending further investigation. The Salem Park Board will be meeting today at the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 12:00. In the meeting, Parks and Rec Director Greg Nash will give his report; the board will discuss the Winter Sports Programs and upcoming programs for 2013. There will be an update on the City Pool, Soccer fields and a discussion on the Parks and Recreation sales tax. In other business, the board will follow up on the addition of flagpoles in the Freedom Center and the City Park, the renovation of the Freedom Center and any other business. The meeting is open to the public.

Courtney Putman scored 17 points and Kaytlyn Wells added 16 more while capturing 13 rebounds to lead the Salem Tigers to a 57-48 win over the Lady Panthers of Mountain Grove. Savannah Hanning also scored 12 points to help the Lady Tigers even their record at 4-4 on the year and go to 1-0 in the SCA. Salem will be off until after Christmas when they will be in the Lebanon Tournament.

Earnest Ross scored a game-high 16 points to help 12th-ranked Missouri demolish South Carolina State, 102-51, on Monday. Keion Bell had 12 points while Laurence Bowers and Stefan Jankovic dropped in 11 points each for the Tigers (9-1), who are a perfect 7-0 at home this season. Phil Pressey scored six points to go with six assists and two steals in the win. Missouri will play 10th ranked Illinois at the Scottrade Center on Saturday.

Funeral services for Leonard Cornick of St. James, age 99, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in St. James.

Funeral services for Phyllis Ann Turner of Salem, age 56, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will be the Jane Callahan Cemetery in Reynolds County. Memorials may be made to the Turner Family.

Funeral services for John J. Gilbert of St. Louis, formerly St. James, age 85, will be held Friday at 2:30 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Private memorial services and interment for Loma T. Love of Salem, formerly of Chandler, Arizona, age 86, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Three Rivers Hospice.  All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
