The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday afternoon at the city hall council chambers. Mayor Gary Brown said that the consent agenda showed sales tax revenues of $151,125.87 for the month of November that puts the city right on track with their budgeted figures. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about the generators for the city and Mayor Brown said they are tested every month. He also asked about using the old dumpsite and could the city use the property for anything. Street Superintendent Benny Bryson said that DNR checks it at least once a year, but doesn’t think that the city can do anything with the property but use it for a hay field. He also asked about the culverts at the city park and Bryson said that the second information request has been sent to the Corp of Engineers. Alderman Riley asked about the status of two burnout properties and the board will send letters out to set a date for a public hearing. Mayor Gary Brown said that he talked with Superintendent Steve Bryant from Salem R-80 about the Safe Routes to School grant that could help pay for the sidewalks on Highway 19 South and Route HH. He also stated that letters have been sent out to the residents on Highway 72 from the Highway 32 west junction to Dent County Road 321 about the city wanting to annex the highway and the right-of-way. Brown says that only one person has opposed the idea. Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs invited the alderman to the ribbon cutting ceremony and open house at the Rightway Remanufacturing Plant in the Masters Industrial Park on Friday at 1:00. The Board then approved Bill #3113 and 3114 that authorizes the mayor to sign the MPUA and the APPA/NRECA mutual aid agreements, approved Bill #3115 that amends the city ordinances prohibiting the offenses of harassment, stalking, cyber-harassment and establishing the punishment for the offenses; and approved Bill #3116 that would approve a settlement agreement for up to $590 with the city and US Cellular in the class action suit for unpaid local taxes. The board approved a budget adjustment in the electrical department moving $6,000 from capital improvements to $5,181.50 for Christmas decorations and $818.50 for building maintenance. This money became available as the electric department has refurbished the Quonset hut on Center Street for storage. The board approved the airport board recommendations made by Gary Brown and they are Steve Spencer, Jim Heavin, Rick Domeyer, John Maledy, City Engineer Bill Huffman, Street Superintendent Benny Bryson and Alderman Jim McDaniels. The board also approved the city’s liability, auto and property insurance quote from Town and Country Associates Mike Elliot for $145,973 plus $385 for Terrorism Insurance, $1,735 for Crime Coverage and $2,100 for Airport Liability. The automobile insurance will go down once the title changes on the five sold police cars. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session.
The Salem Police reports that an injury accident occurred on December 12th at 3:41 p.m. at Fourth Street and Highway 19 North. According to the police report, a 1995 Oldsmobile Intrigue driven by Jesus Delor of Salem, was traveling eastbound on 4th Street, approaching Highway 19 North, when it struck a 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by Trina Lindsey in the rear of the vehicle as they came to a stop at the intersection. There was minor damage to both vehicles and Trina Lindsey did report injuries and was taken to the Salem Hospital by ambulance.
Today is the first day for candidates to sign up for school board positions, the hospital board and the city of Salem. Signups will continue through January 22nd. There is a $25 filing fee for the city east and west aldermen positions as well as mayor.
Toys can still be dropped off for the Dent County Fire Protection District Toy Drive, but they must be dropped off by Wednesday. Toys will be distributed on December 20th and 21st at the Dent County Fire Station. Toys can still be dropped off at the KSMO Radio studios, Salem Police Station, Dollar General and the Dent County Fire Protection District.
The “Trees and Trains” display at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main will only be available through Saturday. If you have not yet had the opportunity to get by, time is running out! The Ozark Natural and Resource Center is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM today through Saturday. The Dent County Collector’s Office will be open extended hours after Christmas. The office will be open until 5:00 December 26th, 27th, 28th and the 31st. Remember, all tax payments are due by January 1st. You can pay them at the Collector’s office, through the mail as long as they are postmarked December 31st, or you can drop them off in the drop box at the Dent County Courthouse.

The Salem Lady Tigers won their second straight game as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Cabool in SCA play Monday night, 58-26. Natalie Howard led the way for Salem with 19 points followed by Allison Jones with 12 points. Salem is now 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in the SCA conference. They will be at St. Clair Friday night starting at 6:00 with the JV contest followed by the varsity game.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will host the West Plains Zizzers tonight starting with the JV contest at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO starting at about 7:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Travis Wrightsman as well as on www.ksmoradio.com.
Demarre Carroll scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help lead Missouri past North Carolina A&T, 94-66. Missouri also had double digit scoring from Leo Lyons with 15 points and Marshall Brown with 13 points. The Tigers move to 8-3 and on the year and they will be off until Saturday when they will face the Fighting Illini in the “Bragging Rights” game at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Funeral services for Eunice Hazel Blackwell of Salem, age 89, will be held today at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem United Methodist Church/Salem Public Library.
Funeral services for Clay Hahn of St. James, age 53 will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Donor’s Choice.
Funeral services for Ernie Ray Hutchens of Salem, age 69, will be held Friday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Ernie Hutchens Memorial Fund.
Funeral services for Denis Charles Kindel of Rolla, age 60, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
