The City of Salem Park Board met on Thursday night. President Doug Barnes and Director Greg Nash updated the Board on the DNR grant for the Little League Complex. Nash reported that Coca-Cola who had made an earlier commitment to donate scoreboards for the project was not going to be able to follow through with their donation. The Park Board will be looking for local businesses for donations of scoreboards in exchange for advertising. The board also discussed the enormous parking problems that occur during games that are held at the new complex. Although the parking area across the road from the Activity Center can be used, the Park Board is in agreement that the ditch near the park entrance need to be covered to allow additional parking there as well. The Board of Alderman approved this project in 2004, and the board is in agreement that this project needs to happen to help remedy the problem. They also discussed building the batting cages in the southwest corner of the parking area across from the Salem Freedom Activity Center with monies from the Salem Youth Activity Fund. Once the scoreboards are in place the grant will be complete according to the final requests that were made by the Department of Natural Resources Grant Management Division. After discussion about the Al Brown Fields and what were in the plans for there next spring, Nash reported that they hoped to do some seeding and fertilizing in the spring in the outfield areas as well as taking measures to alleviate the mole problem. The Alice Lou Craig Municipal Pool was discussed and there was concern from the board members as to the condition of the filter tank and whether we could limp through another summer with the present one. The tank was functioning at the end of last season but if problems were to occur we would not know till the entire system is started near the end of April or the first of May. Costs associated with replacing the tank and various other things that could arise could run close to $50,000. The new soccer fields were discussed and Mike Rocoberto will be heading a committee to discuss the needs for this project. At present MoDot has approved an entrance to the area coming off of Route HH. After the entrance is complete, the city will be looking at building roads throughout the area. The Election of Officers was tabled until after the Mayor and Board of Alderman makes their appointments for the board next April. President Barnes reported that an individual had contacted him about permission to allow geocaching at the City Park. This is an activity where people participate in a scavenger hunt using their GPS systems. And the board approved the request. Barnes also voiced his concern for purchasing and placing covers for the fluorescent lights that are located above the basketball/volleyball area in the Freedom Activity Center,since they can be shattered by a stray ball and the board agreed. The meeting was then adjourned and the board members toured the new concession stand and the outlying areas at the new Little League Complex located at the City Park.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their next meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. After roll call and hearing of persons, the Board will address bids for a laptop for the Electric Department, bids for Scoreboards for the Little League Fields and bids for the refinishing of the floor in the Maintenance Shop. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Mc Daniels, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson will discuss miscellaneous items involving the City along with comments by Mayor Gary Brown. During the Introduction of Bills, Bill #3088 which was approved by the Board at a previous meeting is an ordinance closing an undeveloped portion of Beezley Street requested by Otto Bobbinger. New and miscellaneous business to be addressed will include: the Board needs to decide if the City should take out Terrorism Insurance, and the City Clerk is requesting permission to attend the City Clerk’s Regional Meeting in Kansas. After the approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then adjourn and go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and pending litigation. The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting is open to the public.
Natalie Howard scored 16 points and Kirsten Stephens added 10 more as the Salem Tigers improved to 7-1 on the year with a 46-31 win over the Newburg Lady Wolves Friday night. Salem will start their SCA season tonight as they host the Cabool Lady Bulldogs starting at 6:00 with the JV contest followed by the varsity contest.
The Salem Lady Tigers are seeded 5th in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament and drew a bye in the first round. They will play Eugene at 5:00 on December 28th.
Dan Hamhuis' goal late in the third period tied the game and Kimmo Timonen scored the game-winner in overtime as Nashville rallied to beat St. Louis, 2-1. Lee Stempniak scored the lone goal for the Blues, who have now dropped 11 in a row. St. Louis remains winless (0-2-2) in the four games since Andy Murray took over head coaching duties for Mike Kitchen. The Blues play in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.
Steven Jackson rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns as the St. Louis Rams handled the Oakland Raiders, 20-0, at McAfee Coliseum. Jackson carried the ball 31 times and Marc Bulger managed the game well, throwing for 137 yards on 11-of-22 passing, as St. Louis (6-8) snapped a two-game losing streak. Torry Holt caught four passes for 59 yards and Isaac Bruce grabbed three balls for 58 yards in the win for the Rams.
LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns to lead the San Diego Chargers over the Kansas City Chiefs, 20-9, at Qualcomm Stadium. Trent Green ended 23-of-41 for 185 yards for the Chiefs (7-7), who have dropped three straight but still remain in the thick of the AFC playoff race. Larry Johnson ended with just 84 yards rushing for Kansas City.

Funeral services for Joette Ann Moore of Viburnum will be held today at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Carol McCall Stephens Headrick of Salem, age 84, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 8:00. A special music service will be held at 6:00 tonight. Interment will be in the McCall Family Plot in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with an 84-ballon salute. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or Leukemia Society of America.
