The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an accident, property damage and mental commitment order. On Sunday, December 6th at 6:15 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the scene of an accident that led to the arrest of a 46-year old Salem female for driving while intoxicated, driving while having her license suspended and leaving the scene of an accident. She was incarcerated and issued summons to appear in court. On Monday evening, December 7th at 6:09, an officer was dispatched to Highway 32 and Oak in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged the sunroof on a red Pontiac Sunfire. The value of the damage is unknown. At 8:50 that same evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The report revealed glass valued at $177.61 was damaged at the Town and Country Bank on Highway 32 and Macarthur. Then at 9:00 that same night, an officer served a mental commitment order to a 47-yearold Salem female. She was transported to the Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center in Farmington, where she was released to their custody. Livestock producer Leon Kreisler of Salem was re-elected to a two-year term on the Missouri Farm Bureau board of directors during the organization’s 95^th annual meeting held December 8^th at Osage Beach. Kreisler represents District 8 in the south-central area of the state. He was first elected to the position in 2004. Kreisler obtained a B.S. degree in engineering from the Missouri School of Mines, received his M.B.A. from the University of Illinois, and was general superintendent of Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America.  He is owner/operator of Oak Knoll Ranch, where he and his wife, Helen, farm 480 acres, managing a 100-cow/calf operation in Dent County. Kreisler is past president of the Dent County Farm Bureau and has also served as county legislative committee chairman. He is also involved with the Missouri Soil and Water Commission, serves as a director with the Missouri Forage and Grassland Council and the Salem Memorial District Hospital, and is a past recipient of the State Grassland Farmer of the Year award.  Leon and Helen were 2007 winners of the Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda including the minutes along with the food service report, the attendance report and the substitute list, Superintendent Steve Bryant will then update the Board on communications. Bryant will then address the legislative priorities for 2010, the community partnership grant award for food service, the student and staff recognitions and accomplishments, and the Board of Education candidate filings. In new business the Board will address the CIA (curriculum, instruction and assessment) looping in the elementary grades, there will be program evaluations on vocational programs, community education and the comprehensive school improvement plan (CSIP). The Board will then address the race to the tap (RT3) resolution, summer school for 2010, the MUSIC insurance renewal and set a tentative graduation date. The Board may then vote to go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

A Salem man was indicted on federal firearms charges according to acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap. John Atkinson 31-years old of Salem, was indicted November 19^th by a federal grand jury on one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Due to his previous felony convictions, he is forbidden by law to own or possess firearms. If convicted, this charge carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000. This case was investigated and prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which seeks to prevent violent crime through enforcement of federal firearms laws, such as the law prohibiting convicted felons from possessing firearms. Reap commended the work on the case by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives; and Assistant United States Attorney Michael Bert, who is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’ Office.

The Salem Senior High School will be holding a Planning and Paying for College presentation tonight from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Topics will include misconceptions about financial aid, types of financial aid and how to apply for financial aid. All high school parents are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided. The Dent County Collector’s Office will be open this Saturday from 8:30 until noon for those who would like to pay their taxes.

Cristobal Huet stopped all 27 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season as Chicago shut down St. Louis, 3-0, at United Center. Ty Conklin made 32 stops in defeat for the Blues, who have dropped three of five. The Blues will face the Tampa Bay Lightning Friday night.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with outfielder Shane Costa on a minor league contract.

The St. Louis Rams placed guard Jacob Bell on injured reserve. They then claimed tackle Ryan McKee off waivers from the New York Jets; promoted tackle Eric Young from the practice squad to the active roster.
