This past Sunday night, December 14th at 8:15 in the Dent County Jail, 34-year old Jason A. Hall of Owensville, was found deceased in his cell. According to Sheriff Rick Stallings, a jailer discovered Hall unresponsive and emergency services were called. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White. Stallings reported that Hall was housed in an isolation cell due to an unrelated medical condition and had been observed by jail staff at about 5:30 Sunday afternoon. The cause of death is pending autopsy results and the determination of the coroner. Hall was being held in the Dent County Jail on felony assault charges. As per jail policy, the Missouri State Highway Patrol has been asked to investigate the death.

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell indicated the workers in the Montauk area would be cutting overhanging limbs and doing some grading if possible on some white rock roads, while workers in the Bunker area would also be cutting limbs and checking the roads for downed limbs and trees. Purcell said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5600 and two men would be hauling rock from the creek. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2140 and 2250. He said maintenance would be done on Dent County Truck #118, one man would be hauling brown rock from the creek and another would be screening the brown rock. Larson also had crews out checking for downed trees and limbs from the storm Sunday night. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported to the commission last Thursday at the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting that Route TT over Crooked Creek was voted as the top priority for the Meramec Region to be addressed by MoDOT if funds are available as voted on by TAC members. He said the External Relations Committee voted to move the MRPC Annual Awards Dinner and Banquet be held on the third Thursday of October so that attendees could better see the facility where the event is being held and not have to drive there in darkness. He also said at the MRPC meeting that members were able to discuss issues with many legislators. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said she is still preparing for the 2015 budget, preparing year-end reports and doing payroll. She did want to remind anyone that wants to run for offices this April to fill out state form 5120 that deals with candidates being current on their personal property and real estate taxes as well as any bonding requirements. The commissioners traveled to the Shannon County Courthouse to inspect the EPM temperature control system that they have installed and see how it works. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their December meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 5:30 pm. After the approval of the minutes from the November 18th meeting will be the summary of operations and statistics reports for November followed by the nursing and ancillary service reports. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will update the Board with an auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and legislative issues. In old business, the Board will discuss the 2011 strategic planning goals update, the Community Health Needs Assessment, the Ozark Independent Health Alliance (OIHA), there will be an update on Ebola and the elections filings for a District #2 seat on the Board that will begin today and run through January 20, 2015. In new business the Board will address the employee health insurance and purchases made for the hospital. The December meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 5:50 Monday morning in Phelps County on Highway 63 about four miles south of Edgar Springs. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 18-year old Jacob Lane of Newburg was traveling northbound on Highway 63, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, went airborne and overturned. Lane suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

The Salem Tiger Boys’ basketball team will face the Rolla Bulldogs tonight at the SHS Gym. The JV action begins at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at about 7:30. It will also be Autograph Picture Night where those fans with a paid admission will get an 8 by 10 inch glossy photo of the team. Salem enters the game with a 4-1 record. The St. Louis Blues will host the L.A. Kings tonight at the Scottrade Center at 7:00. The Blues are 20-8-2 on the year and have 42 points. KSMO Radio will join this game in progress following the Salem Tiger game.

The Kansas City Royals have been making a splash in the free agent market the past week. On Monday, the Royals reportedly signed former All Star outfielder Alex Rios to a one-year deal. Rios, who was an All-Star in 2006 and 2007, has hit for a career average of .278 with 165 homers, 762 RBI and 244 stolen bases in 1,586 games across 11 seasons with the Blue Jays, White Sox and Rangers. Also on Monday, Kansas City inked pitcher Yohan Pino to a one-year contract. This past Thursday the Royals found their replacement for Billy Butler, signing first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales to a two-year contract. The 31-year-old switch-hitter is a career .271 hitter with 110 homers and 387 RBI in 718 games.

Funeral services for Mildred A. “Mickey” Mowry of Rolla, age 90, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Mausoleum in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the Barnes Jewish Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Funeral services for Pamela Lynn McElvy of Edgar Springs, age 47, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. There will be no interment.

Funeral services for William “Bill” Young of Viburnum, age 62, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Cuba.

Graveside memorial services for Susan Irene Connell of Salem, age 63, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial Mass for Rose Marie James of Jadwin, age 67, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
