Salem R-80 Superintendent Cindy Rumpf announced her retirement last night at the monthly board of education meeting, effective at the end of the 2011/2012 school year. The board voted unanimously, 7-0, to accept. Rumpf is in her second year as the superintendent, after spending four years as the district’s assistant superintendent. The school year officially ends on June 30^th, 2012.

The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6610, material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2400, 2430, 4080 and 5420 and culverts and crossover pipes were being cleaned out in the Bunker area. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported the brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 3260 and 5330, rock was going to be hauled to Dent County Road 2070, rock was going to be screened and crews would also be checking for washouts and downed signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation Board meeting on Tuesday in St. James. The Board reviewed the audit for the past year and the audit was clean. All three Dent County Commissioners attended a meeting Wednesday at the TCRC with HMN Architects from Overland Park, Kansas regarding the do’s and dont’s of Capitol Projects. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to register to vote is January 11^th for the Presidential Primary coming up in February. The first day to absentee vote in the clerk’s office is Tuesday, December 27^th. The Commission was reviewing add-ons, abatements and collections for November and approving bills. Skiles wanted to remind everyone that the last day the county would pay bills this year would be December 29^th. Other than payroll, no bills will be approved or paid by the Commission until the budget is approved the end of January. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Park Board met for a meeting Thursday at noon at the Salem TCRC. At the meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash said that the soccer program this year went well at the Al Brown Fields as teams played double headers to get their games in. He stated that the soccer goals have been removed and that the Al Brown park has been cleaned up. Nash reported that the Parks and Recreation Department is taking care of the recycling for the city, sorting and transporting the materials to Rolla. He said that the pool house, concession stands and restrooms have all been winterized, and the water meter has been shut off. Nash also said that tree trimming has been done at the Roadside Park and Center Street Park as well as at the city park, and the wood collected will be used to warm the workshop. He went on to say that the Old Middle School grounds have been cleaned up after the city got the property back. Nash said that the Youth Basketball program would be held for 1st through 6^th graders again in 2012 with signups in mid-January with practices starting the first of February and games beginning around the middle part of February. It was suggested that teams may also be able to use the old Middle School Gym for practice if the floor is still sound. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said that the city would check that out and also make sure that there is a restroom available. Alderman Jerry Randell asked Nash about the batting cages that had been promised by the city and Nash had some bids that totaled over $10,000 using two-inch tubular supports and a concrete base. Board member S.N. Ball suggested that the city use old telephone poles for supports for the cage with metal roping to be used to hold the netting that could be purchased for a huge amount of savings. The spot for the batting cages discussed was behind the “red” field at the city park. The board also discussed a Parks and Recreation Sales Tax to support the programs and facilities. City Administrator Clayton Lucas was going to see if it was still possible to get a sales tax issue on the April ballot. Another meeting of the board would be called if it is discovered that this is possible to set the levy and work on the language for the ballot. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Tiger Boy’s basketball team will be in Potosi tonight starting with the JV contest at 6:00, followed by the varsity. Salem is 1-4 on the year and you’ll be able to hear the varsity game on KSMO and on ksmoradio.com

The Salem Lady Tiger basketball team will be playing in Newburg tonight starting with the JV game at 6:00. The Lady Tigers are still looking for their first win of the year. 

Michael Dixon and Ricardo Ratliffe each scored 18 points, leading Missouri to a 104-67 thrashing of Kennesaw State. Marcus Denmon netted 17 points and Matt Pressey chipped in 15 points for the Tigers (10-0). Missouri will be hosting William & Mary on Sunday at 1:30, and you’ll be able to hear it on KSMO.

Alexander Steen had a goal and an assist, helping the St. Louis Blues beat the New York Rangers, 4-1. David Perron, Jason Arnott, and Patrik Berglund also lit the lamp for the Blues, who won the final four games of a five-game home-stand. Brian Elliott made 25 saves for St. Louis, which improved to 12-2-3 under Ken Hitchcock. The Blues will be in Nashville to face the Predators Saturday night at 7:00, and KSMO will be broadcasting that game.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be hosting the undefeated Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and the St. Louis Rams will be hosting the Cincinnati Bengals. Both of these games will kick-off at noon.

The St. Louis Cardinals signed left-handed relief pitcher J.C. Romero to a one-year contract on Thursday.

Funeral services for Cora Kathleen “Kathy” Sanders of Salem, age 51, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mary Etta Moyer of Salem, age 97, will be held Sunday at 12:30 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Judith Ann Black of Rolla, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Visitation will be Saturday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Funeral services for Harold Wilbur Steelman of Salem, age 90, will be held on Wednesday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Corinth Baptist Church.
