Like it or not, winter weather is here. When snow and ice hit, highways and roads can become dangerous.  Fortunately, Missouri drivers can find out what lies on the road ahead with MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map. Located at www.modot.org, the map gives drivers an up-to-the-minute view of road conditions for major Missouri highways. Conditions for major routes across the state are color-coded to give visitors the information they need at a glance. The map shows road conditions for major Missouri cities, counties, MoDOT districts and other travel destinations.  Individual routes can also be selected.  A text report and links to road condition maps for surrounding states are also available. Although the map is updated around the clock during winter events, road conditions can go from bad to worse in an instant.  Drivers are strongly urged to consult other informational sources before heading out in any questionable weather. Local television and radio stations and the Missouri State Highway Patrol provide information to supplement conditions reported on the map. Travelers can find the map by visiting MoDOT’s Web site at www.modot.org and clicking on the map in the center of the page. You can also call the Missouri Road Condition Report number is 1-800-222-6400.

Colonel James F. Keathley, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to make the public aware of the Patrol’s participation in the 2008 C.A.R.E. Lifesaver Weekend scheduled to begin just after midnight this Friday, December 19, 2008, and ending at midnight on Sunday, December 21, 2008. Troopers across the state will be actively enforcing all traffic-related statutes during this period with emphasis on seat belt use, aggressive driving, excessive speed, and driving while intoxicated. Troopers have been asked to maximize Patrol visibility in an effort to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes. This goal of Lifesaver Weekend is to increase public awareness and to make Missouri’s roadways as safe as possible. Please allow plenty of time for your holiday travel, reduce your speed, wear your seat belt, and don’t drink and drive. Drivers are reminded to allow plenty of distance between vehicles, especially in inclement weather. If you see a driver you feel may be impaired or a danger to the public, you are encouraged to report it to the Patrol. Aggressive or impaired drivers may be reported by calling at 1-800-525-5555, or *55 on your cellular phone.

As recently shared at a community briefing hosted by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), two Phelps County bridges will temporarily close, though not at the same time, during improvement work during the 2009 construction season under the Safe & Sound bridge improvement program. These bridges are at Corn Creek on Route M and Spring Creek on Route K. According to South Central District Safe & Sound Coordinator Ed Hess, the department recognizes there will be impacts to those who live on or travel the route.  Among the efforts to make the most up-to-date information available to the public, a web page has been created on the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) website. The page is located at www.modot.mo.gov/southcentral and features the latest information available. Those with questions about the program or plans for specific bridges also are welcome to call the MoDOT Customer Service Center, toll-free, at 1-888-ASK MoDOT (275-6636).
