With the support of the National Park Service (NPS), partners of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail will gather on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at 1:00 PM to unveil official national historic trail signs. The event will begin downtown at the Iron County Courtroom in Ironton, Missouri. Following the dedication, guests will have the opportunity to drive this newly signed three-mile stretch of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. The unveiling event celebrates the continuing effort by the NPS and its partners to preserve and develop the national historic trail for increased public awareness and use. Participating in the event will be Iron County officials, the Missouri Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association (TOTA), and area elected officials. Donald Barzowski, Iron County's presiding commissioner, and Deloris Gray Wood, president of the Missouri chapter of TOTA, will unveil the new signs. Driving directions for the route will be provided to those who wish to follow the trail after the dedication ceremony. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the United States government's forced removal of the Cherokee Indians from their traditional homelands in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama to Indian Territory in present-day Oklahoma in 1838 and 1839. Over 600 miles of the trail stretch across 26 counties in southern Missouri, and include three separate routes. Congress designated the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail as part of the National Trails System in 1987, and the NPS National Trails Intermountain Region is responsible for working with communities and partners to preserve the trail.
