Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Dent County.  The checkpoint was conducted from 10:00 pm on Friday, December 9th until 2:00 am, Saturday, December 10th, on Missouri Highway 19, near the roadside park in Salem.  Assisting in the enforcement operation were officers from the Salem Police Department and the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. During the course of the four-hour operation, officers stopped 239 vehicles.  There was one DWI arrest, along with 14 seat belt violations, one non-moving traffic offense, five driver’s license violations, four uninsured motorist violations, and two misdemeanor drug violations. A total of 45 warnings were issued.

An accident happened at 8:30 Wednesday morning in Phelps County on Route O about seven miles South of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Oldsmobile driven by 30-year old Stacey E. Bunton of Edgar Springs, was traveling northbound on Route O. Bunton failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the left side of the roadway striking a culvert. Bunton suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Oldsmobile sustained moderate damage and was left at the scene. The family will remove later.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a contract during its regular meeting on December 7th for pavement improvements in Dent, Douglas, Howell and Texas Counties. The $2,654,000 contract was awarded to Pace Construction Company, LLC, of St. Louis. The project includes thin lift overlays on: Route 119 from Route 32 to the end of state maintenance; Route Y from the Texas county line to Route 60 in Howell County; Route 181 from Route AD in Cabool to Route 76 in Douglas and Texas Counties; Route 60 from the Texas county line to just west of Beeler Creek in Texas County; Route B from Route 63 in Houston to Route 137 in Raymondville in Texas County and Route F through Houston, in Texas County. Work zones will be marked with signs as work is underway. MoDOT will alert drivers prior to any change in traffic. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution near the work zone and plan for possible delays in traffic. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting last Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda, the minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and accepted with one change. Bills were paid and file copies were signed. The Board then signed reimbursement checks and handed them out to personal with thanks from the Board to the firefighters for the jobs they do. The 2012 budget was reviewed; a motion was made and carried with the 2012 budget then being approved. After some discussion and review, a motion was made to award a 2 percent pay increase for Chief Brad Nash for the 2012 year effective January 1, 2012, and carried for all. During the calendar review, the election filing dates for the one, 6-year term available on the Dent County Fire Protection Board goes on now until Tuesday, January 17th. The Toys For Tots give-a-way will be held December 19th at the fire station. Chief Nash then reported that there were 22 calls for November bringing the total calls thus far this year to 331. Chief Nash then updated the Board on the FEMA grant that is nearing it’s completion with the last stage being the installation of the antennae on the Fidelity tower. Currently a PL counter has been installed to check for the correct frequency and wattage to be used. After a review of this, the repeater will be moved to the tower site and the Department radios will be programmed for narrow band. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, January 3rd at the Dent County Fire Protection District beginning at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Tuesday, December 6th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer conducted an investigation of a theft that was recorded on surveillance cameras at Wal-Mart. The investigation led to the arrest of a 38-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $12.97. He was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on unrelated charges. On Thursday, December 8th at 12:19 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem male, for possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and driving while revoked. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that evening at 7:45, an officer was dispatched to Gas Plus at Highway 32 and Pershing in reference to a theft of fuel.  The investigation revealed that a female driver of a white Z-71 Chevrolet truck pumped $30 in fuel and left without paying. Anyone with any information regarding the theft of fuel report, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The St. Louis Blues will be hosting the New York Rangers tonight at 7:00. KSMO will join this game in progress following the Missouri game.

Funeral services for Clyde E. Camden of Viburnum, age 92, will be held today at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Camden Cemetery in Boss.

Funeral services for Arthur C. Fackert, JR, of Montauk, age 72, will be held today at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery.

Funeral service for Annette Michelle (Annie) Durham of Salem, age 32, will be today at noon at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Durham/Strotkamp children at Town & Country Bank.

Funeral services for Steven Wayne Strotkamp of Salem, age 39, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery Memorials may be made to the Strotkamp daughters.

Funeral services for Cora Kathleen “Kathy” Sanders of Salem, age 51, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
