The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4122, 4180, 5600 and 6500, and brush will be cut on Dent County Road 2440. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2530, 2560, 4030, 4480 and 5330, and brush is going to be cut on Dent County Road 3170. Both districts will be stockpiling rock for winter needs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a TAC meeting last Thursday and the first priority on the Highway 63 four-lane expansion when funds are available will be to go from Rolla to just past the Maries County Line, and the second priority will go from Highway 50 toward Westphalia. He said the three bridges to be replaced in Dent County, as part of the 800 Safe and Sound Bridges project will not be done until 2011 or 2012. Skiles will attend a Community Foundation of the Ozarks meeting and also Central Region Workforce Investment Board meeting on Wednesday, and on Thursday he will be attending a Region I Homeland Security Committee meeting. This meeting helps to allocate money to grant projects in the region and Dent County has three grants submitted. Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell discussed her budget with the commission and stated that the State of Missouri is cutting her parcel reimbursement from $5.99 per parcel to $4.00 parcel and possibly to $3.00 per parcel. She said that the reimbursement would also be based on the number of parcels from the year 2006 which was 10,947. She said that at $4.00 parcel, the reimbursement would be $43,788 and at $3.00 per parcel, the reimbursement would be $32,840. Since the reimbursement rate is not yet know, she said that her actual budget would not be ready until the first week of January, but she wanted to let the commission know that more money from general revenue will be needed to make up for the loss of reimbursed money for parcel assessment. At the last meeting, Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings and Deputy Wayne Becker discussed their budget as did Dent County Clerk Angie Curley. The final sales tax figures for 2009 came in and Dent County received $724,498.33 which is  $11,721.26 less than in 2008. That is a reduction of 1.59% from last year. The bids were also opened on the surplus property from the road and bridge department and the sale generated $23,673.49 from the 15 items that were sold. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifters and a domestic assault. On Wednesday, December 9th at 4:07 pm an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifters.  The report led to the arrest of a 32-year old female and a 17-year old male both of Lenox, for stealing.  Both were issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, December 10th at 6:42 pm an officer was contacted at the station in reference to domestic assault.  The report revealed that a 30-year old Salem male had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. At 7:06 pm that evening, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter.  The report led to the arrest of a 26-year old Jerome female for stealing $723.20 in merchandise.  She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant.

The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the Salem Community Center located at 606 North McGrath Lane beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting the Board will address reports including financial reports, the water testing report, a bookkeeping report and the President’s report. The Board will then address any general or new business that may come before the Board. The Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting is open to the public.

Candidate filing begins today and continues through January 19th for numerous positions to be determined during the April 6th Municipal Election. Two aldermen from Salem and the mayoral seat may be filed for and the local school districts will fill board positions. Two hospital directors and one fire district director also will be elected. The Salem Senior High School will be holding a Planning and Paying for College presentation on Thursday, December 17^th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Topics will include misconceptions about financial aid, types of financial aid and how to apply for financial aid. All high school parents are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided. A 3-pointer by Tabi Haney with 1:38 left proved to be the difference as it broke a 25-25 tie and the West Plains Lady Zizzers held on to beat the Salem Lady Tigers, 31-25. Salem was led in scoring by Jennifer Herndon with nine points and ten rebounds. Salem is now 3-3 on the year and they will be at Newburg Friday night to face the Lady Wolves.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will try to break a two-game losing streak as they will be in Rolla to face the Bulldogs. The JV will start things out at 6:00 with the varsity contest to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The St. Louis Blues will be in action tonight as they host the Calgary Flames. You can hear the beginning of the game on KSMO before Salem Tiger basketball, and then hear the third period after Salem Basketball.
