The Department of Conservation recently announced that there are some proposed drastic changes to the permit system for hunting and fishing. The changes, which will become effective July 1, 2009, will affect youth, seniors, college students, landowners, general residents, non-residents and special-permit purchasers. The ideas for these permit changes came from the Conservation Department’s Regulations Committee. The new regulations will eliminate youth deer and turkey permits. Instead, there will be youth pricing for regular deer and turkey permits at 50 percent of the adult price for hunters 15 and younger. There will also be youth pricing for the annual Trout permit, which is required to catch and keep trout outside Missouri’s four trout parks. The Commission also chose to allow nonresidents college, university and technical school students to buy resident hunting and fishing permits. Hunter-education requirements have also changed for all mentors, including landowners. Hunters who are not hunter-education certified have to be in the presence of a properly licensed adult. Mentors born before January 1,1967, are exempt from the requirement to complete hunter-education training. The minimum-age requirement for hunting mentors if now 18. Seniors will also be affected by the changes. The Commission voted to phase out exemptions for senior citizens and replace them with one-time purchase “forever” permits. The new Senior Fish Forever permit will be a life permit to take fish, frogs, mussels, clams, turtles, crayfish and live bait. The Senior Hunt Forever permit will entitle holders to hunt small game for life. The new Senior Hunt or Fish Forever permit will cost $24 and it can be purchased between the ages of 60 and 63, and the cost is $12 if purchased at age 64 or older. A senior hunt and fish forever permit will cost $40 for buyers age 60 to 63 and $20 for those 64 and older. The Conservation Commission also proposed to raise hunting and fishing permit prices effective July 1, 2009; create a landowner registry for those qualified for free landowner permits; and raise the minimum acreage to be qualified for no-cost deer or turkey permits from five to 80 contiguous acres. The Department of Conservation is welcoming comments from the public on these changes. In order to make your voice heard you have until tomorrow, Tuesday, December 16^th. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their next regular meeting this evening at 7:00 at the city hall council chambers. In the hearing of persons, the board will hear from Karen Martin who is the program manager at the cardiovascular Wellness Center. She is asking the city to reconsider their rental request for the wellness center at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. After the consent agenda which includes sales tax number from November, the board will hear from Aldermen Bill Riley, Jim Jackson and Kenneth Nash on miscellaneous items. Alderman Jim McDaniels would like to discuss emergency keys, expansion of the city limits and other miscellaneous items. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report that will include an update on the safe rout to schools grant, an update on the soccer field grant, present an asphalt update and provide other miscellaneous items.  The board will then hear and discuss two bills: bill #3145 concerning the appointment of the city clerk, and Bill #3146 concerning the appointment of the city treasurer. In new and miscellaneous business, the board will discuss the city’s liability insurance and terrorism insurance, discuss burial spaces for indigents, and discuss a possible business license ordinance. After the bills are approved, the board may vote to go into closed session otherwise the meeting will adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 16^th at the Salem Community Center located at 606 North McGrath Lane beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting will be reports including: the financial report, water-testing report, Presidents report and the IECA report. After general business and any new business that may come before the Board, there will be a vote to go into Closed Session. The regular monthly meeting of the Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County is open to the public.

Jennifer Herndon scored 35 points as the Salem Lady Tigers captured the consolation championship at the Cabool Lady Bulldog Tournament Saturday by the score of 60-28 over Mountain-View Liberty. Salem reached that game by defeating the host Lady Bulldogs of Cabool Friday night by the score of 56-31. The Lady Tigers are now 2-2 and they will face the Lady Zizzers of West Plains tonight at 6:00 in non-conference play.

The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers were mauled by the Waynesville Tigers Saturday night as Waynesville trounced Salem, 68-23. Salem was led in scoring by C.J. Smith as he netted 11 points. Salem will host the Rolla Bulldogs tomorrow night in the home opener. Salem is now 2-3 on the year.

Patrick Marleau netted the game-winner late in the third and the San Jose Sharks erased a 3-1 deficit and came away with a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Blues at HP Pavilion. Brad Winchester registered a pair of goals and David Backes had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, which ended a three-game road trip 0-3 and has dropped five of seven overall. Alexander Steen had two assists. The Blues face Calgary Tuesday night.

Leo Lyons picked up a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Missouri Tigers in a 75-64 victory over the Murray State Racers at Mizzou Arena. Matt Lawrence also added 14 points for the Tigers (8-1) in their sixth straight win. DeMarre Carroll contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Missouri will play Stetson next Saturday.

Seneca Wallace's 45-yard pass to Deion Branch set up Olindo Mare's 27-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Seattle Seahawks a 23-20 win over the St. Louis Rams at Edward Jones Dome. Steven Jackson ran for 91 yards and a touchdown and Marc Bulger threw for 207 yards with a score on 19-of-32 passing for the Rams (2-12), who have lost eight in a row.

Philip Rivers threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson with 36 seconds remaining in the game, as the San Diego Chargers erased an 11-point deficit in the final two minutes to stun Kansas City, 22-21, and keep their playoff hopes alive. Tyler Thigpen threw for 171 yards on 19-of-28 attempts with one touchdown and an interception for the Chiefs (2-12). KC's Connor Barth missed a 50-yard field goal as time expired and San Diego escaped Arrowhead Stadium with the victory.
