An accident occurred Wednesday morning at 11:25 in Dent County on Highway 19 at the Salem City Limits. According to the highway patrol report, a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by 49-year old Wilburn Dixon of Salem was traveling south on Highway 19. The Oldsmobile was turning onto Dent County Road 508 and was struck from behind by a 2001 Dodge pickup truck driven by 69-year old Max McDonald of Jadwin. Dixon suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Oldsmobile sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The Dodge pickup sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene.

From now until January 16th at 5:00 pm, the City of Salem will be accepting a Declaration of Candidacy for one East Ward Alderman and one West Ward Alderman. A Declaration of Candidacy may be filed with the City Clerks office located at 400 North Iron, between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. To date, Jim Jackson has filed for the East Ward Alderman and Bill Riley Jr. has filed for the West Ward Alderman. A Declaration of Candidacy received shall be placed on the ballet in the order they are received for the Municipal Election to be held on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007.  Requirements for Alderman include: you must be twenty-one years of age, you must be a citizen of the United States, an inhabitant and resident of the City for at least one year before the election and be a resident of the ward from which one is elected and may not be in arrears of any charges owed to the City of Salem. The fee for filing is $25.00. Other filings that are currently being taken in the area are for school boards, the hospital board and fire board.

The Salem Park Board will be holding a meeting tonight at the Salem TCRC in the Salem Freedom Activity Center beginning at 6:30 pm. Following the report from Parks and Recreation Director, Greg Nash, will be to plan for the youth basketball season and there will also be an update on the Grant and Armory ball fields, which will include: the batting cages, the concession stand, parking, the scoreboards and sidewalks. Other items to be addressed include the Salem youth activity fund, the Al Brown fields, the swimming pool, and the soccer fields, as well as an election of officers, getting coaches and any other business that may come before the Park Board. The meeting tonight of the Park Board is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports for the first part of December involving thefts. On December 1st at 11:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a 23-year old Salem female had laid her cell phone down while at Burger King and a person(s) unknown took the phone. The silver Motorola camera phone is valued at $150.00 and the report is under investigation. On December 4th at 4:15 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Town and Country Bank in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took a CD/DVD player, a Whistler radar detector and a set of jumper cables from a red 2001 Chevrolet S-10 truck that was parked on the lot. The value of the items missing totaled $600.00 and the report is  under investigation. On December 10th at 5:50 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Casey’s General Store on Highway 19 South in reference to leaving without paying for fuel. The report revealed that a white car pulled onto the lot where the driver pumped $20.01 in fuel and then left without paying. The report is under investigation. Later the same evening at 10:00 an officer was detailed back to the same Casey’s General Store on Highway 19 South in reference to a leaving without paying for fuel. The report revealed that a maroon minivan pulled onto the lot where the passenger exited the minivan and pumped $36.53 in fuel and then left without paying. The report is under investigation. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The final sign-up for the Dent County Fire Protection District 2006 Toy Drive will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Dent County Fire Department. Eligible parents can schedule a pick-up time when you register your children today. Pick up dates and times to get the toys for their children can be made on Monday, December 18th from 2:00 to 7:00 pm or Tuesday, December 19th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Fire Station.
