An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 1:25 on Highway 32 about two miles west of Banner in Iron County that took the life of a woman from Boss. According to the highway patrol report, 54-year old Dickie L. Maize of Boss was driving his 2002 Ford northbound when he lost control of the vehicle and it went off the right side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting 36-year old Venessa L. Maize from the Ford. Venessa Maize was taken by ambulance to the Iron County Hospital in Pilot Knob where she was pronounced dead at 2:19. Dickie Maize was wearing a seat restraint while Venessa Maize was not. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Blackies Auto of Viburnum.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening at the Holiday Inn Express. Stephanie Wofford presented the summary of operations for the month of November, which showed only 1,683 outpatients registered during the month with just 729 people using the emergency room. For the month, the hospital showed an excess of expenses over revenues of $169,457. Carol Lacy gave the director of nursing report and there were 185 ambulance runs with 197 patients assessed and 49 dry runs, 21 surgery cases, 241 Home Health visits, 7,595 lab tests, 961 radiological procedures, 232 CT scans, 21 MRI scans, 21 nuclear med scans, 377 rehab treatments, 267 dialysis treatments and 384 clinical visits. In the construction update, Pryor stated that the electric panel installation should now be completed, the Long-Term Care expansion began on November 15^th and the activity room brick has been removed and foundations have been poured. He said that the painting in the surgery center is now 85% complete. Casey Lucas reported on the Electronic Medical Record timeline and said that one software vendor has made a presentation. There will be more to follow with a final vendor to be selected in February. Pryor stated that the Hospital Foundation Program, recruiting specialists as well as Hospice at the hospital would be discussed in January. The board approved a descriptive change to one by-law in the Medical Staff Responsibility Section. Pryor also said that a contract proposal from Krehbiel on the lagoon is being reviewed. In new business, the election filing for District #4 will be from December 14^th through January 18^th. That district includes Bunker and is currently held by Joe Hayes. Pryor then talked about the Salem TCRC and said that the meeting of all the partners and one with the University of Missouri were very positive, and that scenarios and models will be discussed in the new year. The board approved the commercial insurance renewal with Progressive Insurance for $23,259 which is more than 1,500 less than last year; approved the automotive insurance with Town and Country Insurance for $5,134 which is just over $1,500 less than last year, and approved the workman’s comp insurance through Arthur J. Gallagher with Liberty Mutual for $173,360 and that is $6,360 more than last year. The board approved the budgeted purchase of a pulse oximetry for Cardio-Vascular from MMS for $734, and after a long discussion, approved to lease a GE High speed VCI 128 I CT Scanner for radiology with a lease payment of $13,070 per month and maintenance starting after the first 12 months of $7,257 per month. The cost of the machine was $885,000 but also includes a separate bone density machine for no additional charge.  The hospital currently pays about $18,000 per month for their CT Scanner and that lease runs out at the end of the month. The board approved selling two commercial refrigerators purchased in 1971 to the highest bidder. The board then went into closed session.

An accident happened Friday morning at 3:35 in Dent County on Highway 32 about 13 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 34-year old Eldo R. Canaday of Salem was driving a 2004 Ford F-250 eastbound when he lost control on the frost-covered roadway. Canaday overcorrected causing the truck to come back onto the roadway where the vehicle overturned onto it’s top. Canaday suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. Canaday was not wearing a seat restraint.

Chad Elliott scored 23 points to help the Salem Tigers win their first game of the year, 77-67, over St. James Friday night. Jacob Kettner, Dustin Sercl and Jared Patterson each added 12 points as Salem moves to 1-3 on the year. Salem will host Rolla on Tuesday.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers lost to Mountain Grove in the Cabool Tournament Friday night, 62-55. The Girls are 0-4 on the year and will be at West Plains starting tonight at 6:00 with the JV contest.

Kim English and Justin Safford each scored 14 points, as the 15th-ranked Missouri Tigers dominated the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 70-55. Safford also pulled down six rebounds for the Tigers (8-1). Marcus Denmon chipped in with 12 points for Missouri, which is 5-0 at home this season. Mizzou will host Oral Roberts Thursday.

Jussi Jokinen notched the lone goal of the shootout as Carolina clipped St. Louis, 2-1, at Scottrade Center. Alex Pietrangelo provided the lone offense for the Blues. Jaroslav Halak played well in defeat, making 28 saves. The Blues return to action on Wednesday in Detroit.

The Kansas City Chiefs were dominated by San Diego Sunday and lost, 31-0; while the St. Louis Rams were beaten by the New Orleans Saints by the score of 31-13.

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Melky Cabrera. Cabrera spent the 2010 season with the Atlanta Braves after beginning his big league career with the New York Yankees. He hit .255 in 147 games last season with 27 doubles, four homers and 42 runs batted in.

The St. Louis Cardinals have shipped 28-year old infielder Brendan Ryan to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league pitcher Maikel Cleto. Ryan has spent the last four seasons in St. Louis, playing mostly at shortstop while also seeing time at second and third base. He is a career .259 hitter, though he batted just .223 in 139 games last season.
