The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of November. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 22 summons to appear in court, 14 warning tickets, and 25 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 12 accidents, two assaults, four burglaries, one report of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, one report of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked, one report of forgery, and two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report for open containers, four reports of property damage, 20 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, and one report for trespassing. They also investigated three reports of distributing/ delivering/manufacturing/producing/and/or possession of a controlled substance, two reports of possession of marijuana, two reports of possession of opium or derivative, three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia and one report of possession of synthetic drugs. The police department received 1,541 calls for service during the month, handled 94 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 63 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 19 hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff and spent 16 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in November included 24 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, six calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, and 11 calls for domestic disputes. There were five calls for a peace disturbance, seven calls for alarms sounding, and 11 ambulance assist calls. The department drove a total of 7,372 miles and arrested 20 males and 15 females during the month of November.
The Salvation Army partnered up with Wal-mart in Salem to help children in need this Christmas. By hosting the first annual “Fill the Truck” toy drive, Wal-mart shoppers can donate new toys and coats for children in the community. Upon entering the store a large cardboard truck is available for all donations. This “truck” will be available until December 16th. For more info you can call 729-8163.
An accident occurred at 8:30 Tuesday morning in Dent County on County Road 5680 about five miles west of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford Dump Truck driven by 55-year old Utah Warren of Salem was backing up and the load shifted, causing the vehicle to overturn. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.
Today is the last to register for the 2012 Dent County Toy Drive being hosted by the Dent County Fire Protection District. Participants can sign up for from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the fire station. Eligibility requirements include; proof of residency (electric bill, postmarked mail, etc), proof of children in the home (tax return, DFS printout, letter from school, etc), and proof of children’s date of birth (birth certificate(s)-printout from DFS). Participants will get a scheduled time for pickup of the toys at registration. Toys are still being collected from now through Monday, December 19th. Please make sure all items are clean and in good working order. You can drop off your new or slightly used toys at the Dent County Fire Station, the Salem Police Department, Dollar General or the KSMO lobby. Monetary donations will be accepted in person at the Dent County Fire District or by mail to #2 South Main Street, Salem, MO 65560. Through a series of special waste collections held in Rolla, Salem and St. Robert this fall, some 65,291 pounds of electronic waste and appliances were collected and recycled. The items were diverted from landfills to recycling facilities in Missouri. The collection efforts were a partnership between the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District (ORSWMD) and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) along with local sponsors in each community. The City of Rolla, the Phelps County Commission, and Brewer Science, Inc. partnered to hold their collection in September. The City of Salem sponsored its collection in October, and the City of St. Robert sponsored its collection in September. Thanks to the participation of 318 households throughout the seven counties of ORSWMD, 1,180 pieces of electronics and appliances were recycled. This includes 208 televisions, 200 computer monitors, 108 desktop computer CPUs, 95 printers, 68 computer keyboards, 10 air conditioners, six freezers, five stoves, five water heaters and five dish washers among many others. A $5 fee was charged for televisions and computer monitors, and all other items were free to drop off. The fee associated with recycling televisions and computer monitors covers the cost of recycling lead-based components in these items. MRPC contracted with Midwest Recycling Center for the purpose of recycling the items.
Captain Lee Ann Kenley has announced that during the month of December, officers assigned to Troop I will be involved in special operations, including a sobriety checkpoint in Dent County.

Tyler Kean scored 22 points to lead the Rolla Bulldogs past the Salem Tigers Tuesday night by the score of 73-53. Brady Floyd scored 17 points for the Tigers while Chad Elliott added 12 more and Jake Arzt netted 10 points. Salem falls to 1-4 on the year and they will host Potosi Friday night at the Salem High School Gym.
Left-hander George Sherrill and right-hander Dan Wheeler, both 35 years old with long histories of relief pitching, have been signed to Minor League contracts by the Kansas City Royals. Sherrill’s career record over nine big league seasons is 19-17 with 56 saves and a 3.77 ERA in 442 games. He was also an All-Star in 2008. Wheeler’s 13-year record is 25-43 with 43 saves and a 3.98 ERA in 589 games.

Memorial services for Karla Cummings of Salem, age 24, will be held Thursday at 6:00 at the New Harmony Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from 4:30 until service time. Memorials may be made to the memorial fund for her daughter, Shealynn Ayers. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
Funeral services for Matthew Ray Lee of Viburnum, age 31, will be held Thursday at 6:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 4:00 until service time. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family.
Memorial services for Gerald (Jerry) Randell of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Memorial services for Earl Arthur Douglas of Deltona, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 95, will be held Saturday at the Salem Christian Church at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Green Forest Cemetery.
Memorial services for Josephine A. McAllister of Salem, age 88, will be held Sunday at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem at 2:00.
