In November and December, most Missourians receive personal property tax bills from their county government. Since state law now requires boat owners to provide proof of having paid personal property tax on marine vessels, those whose who own them are encouraged to make sure the vessels are listed on their property tax bill and to remember the new requirement to show the previous year’s proof of payment when renewing a registration. Senate Bill #778, which became effective on August 28th, requires proof of paid personal property tax when the owner is applying for title and registration or renewing the registration for the boat or marine vessel. Any owner who does not have the vessel listed with their County Assessor should do so now to ensure easy renewals in the future. Missouri residents should pay personal property tax in their county or residence, except when the vessel is a houseboat or cabin cruiser, which should be taxed where it is located. Non-Missouri residents who keep a boat in Missouri should pay personal property taxes in the county in which the boat is located. Anyone with questions should contact the Missouri Department of Revenue by calling (573) 751-4509 or you can visit their website at www.dor.mo.gov.
