An accident occurred at 6:45 Saturday evening in Crawford County that took the life of a Salem woman. According to the highway patrol report, 24-year old Karla Cummings of Salem was driving a 1997 Mercury Mystique northbound on Highway 19 about four miles south of Steelville. The Mercury then ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a culvert, overturned, and partially ejected Cummings. Crawford County Coroner Paul Hudson pronounced Karla Cummings dead at the scene at 7:04. Her body was then taken to the Hudson Funeral Home. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mercury was totaled and removed from the scene by Mile’s Towing.
On Saturday, December 1st the Dent County Sheriff’s Office received several complaints about mailbox’s that were vandalized. The vandalism that was reported occurred in the areas of Highway 32 West of Salem, the Round Pond Church and Dent County Road 2240. Pictures obtained from a game camera that was monitoring one of the mailboxes gave deputies a suspect vehicle. Deputies located a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle at a residence on County Road 2240. Deputies interviewed the owner of the vehicle. The suspect admitted that he and another male had either run over or smashed, with a pick ax, approximately 10 to 15 mailboxes the night of November 30th. Both suspects were taken into custody and were fingerprinted, photographed and released with a criminal summons to appear in court. The City of Salem Board of Alderman Special Meeting scheduled for today at the City Hall Council Chambers has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for sometime in January.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for Friday, November 30th. At 2:16 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 23-year old Viburnum male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 5:34 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Walmart in reference to trespassing. That investigation revealed that a 62-year old Salem male was violating a no trespass order after having been arrested for shoplifting from Walmart. He was taken into custody, issued a summons to appear in court for trespassing, and released. Later that evening at 8:53, an officer made contact with a 35-year old Salem male in the 100 block of West Eighth, whom had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated. That same evening at 9:36, an officer observed a minor with an alcoholic beverage at the City Park near the skate ramps. The investigation led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem male for a minor in possession of intoxicants and open beer container. Also arrested was a 17-year old Salem male for possession of tobacco, disorderly conduct, and refusal to obey a lawful order of a police officer. The first male was issued a summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. The second male was issued three summonses to appear in court and released. On Sunday, December 9th the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested two individuals from Salem in Phelps County. At 7:45 in the evening, 19-year old Cody Amsden and 35-year old Susanne Medley were taken into custody and were taken to the Dent County Jail. Amsden was arrested on felony Dent County warrants for possession of a controlled substance and stealing. He was also charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana. Medley was arrested on felony warrants for distribution of a controlled substance from Dent, Iron, and Maries Counties. She was also arrested on warrants for forgery and passing bad checks. Amsden is being held on bond while Medley is being held on no bond.

Jack Mueller of St. James scored 30 points, 15 of them in the 4th quarter, as the St. James Tigers beat the Salem Tigers Friday night by the score of 58-44. Salem committed 32 turnovers in the game, but only trailed by two points going into the 4th quarter. Salem was led in scorring by Chad Elliott and Cody Whitaker as they each scored 14 points. Salem drops to 1-3 on the year and will host the Rolla Bulldogs Tuesday night with the JV game at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow at about 7:15. It will be autograph night following the game with varsity players signing 8 by 10 inch team photos. Kaytlyn Wells scored 16 points to lead the Salem Lady Tigers to a victory over Cabool, 68-45, Friday night in the Cabool Tournament. Savannah Hanning added 12 points as the Lady Tigers moved on to play Ava on Saturday in the consolation game. In that game, Salem kept it close but Ava finished out on top, 48-46. Ashley Crocker led Salem with 11 points, but the Lady Tigers drop to 2-3 on the year. Salem will play at West Plains tonight at 6:00.
Laurence Bowers recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as 12th-ranked Missouri used a big second half to beat Tennessee State, 68-38. Alex Oriakhi added 15 points and 10 boards for Missouri (8-1), which is off to an 8-1 start for the third consecutive season. Missouri has now won 71 straight home games against non-conference opponents. Mizzou will is now off until next Monday when they will host South Carolina State.
Brandon Gibson's 13-yard touchdown catch with 48 seconds remaining lifted the St. Louis Rams over the Buffalo Bills, 15-12. Gibson ended with six catches for 100 yards for the Rams (6-6-1), who have won three in a row for the first time since 2006. Sam Bradford completed 19-of-39 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown for St. Louis, who will play the Vikings on Sunday.
Trent Richardson rushed for a pair of touchdowns on Sunday, as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 30-7, at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Jamaal Charles was the lone bright spot for the visitors, rushing for 165 yards and a score on 18 carries for the Chiefs (2-11), who will play the Raiders Sunday.
The Tampa Bay Rays traded pitchers James Shields, Wade Davis and a player to be named to the Kansas City Royals Sunday night in exchange for outfield prospect Wil Myers, pitchers Jake Odorizzi and Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard.

Memorial services for Karla Cummings of Salem, age 24, will be held Thursday at 6:00 at the New Harmony Church in Salem. Visitation will be held from 4:30 until service time. Memorials may be made to the memorial fund for her daughter, Shealynn Ayers. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
Memorial service for Gerald (Jerry) Randell of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Memorial service for Earl Arthur Douglas of Deltona, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 95, will be held Saturday at the Salem Christian Church at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Green Forest Cemetery.
