The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report involving an altercation at a residence on West Third Street. According to the report, the reporting party indicated that someone was in her house and was attempting to kill her husband. When asked about weapons, they stated that the suspect had a knife. While still on the 911 call, they stated that someone just shot at somebody. Deputies Letchworth, Roderman, and Corporal Wilmont responded to the location. While approaching the address, a description of the suspect was given, and a male subject was observed walking east on Third Street. The person appeared to have something in his left hand. Deputy Roderman exited his patrol car with his weapon drawn and ordered the suspect to the ground. Officers Chase and Copeland arrived at the location and placed the suspect in custody. The suspect, identified as John Coleman, had blood dripping from his hands and from the back of his head. An ambulance was requested for the victim and suspect. Contact was made with the reporting party at the residence, and the suspect was positively identified. The victim stated that Mr. Coleman had attacked him in the residence. Coleman had struck the victim with a handgun in the face and head. The victim then ran into an office and closed the door. While in the office, he retrieved a 12-gauge shotgun from his gun cabinet. While the victim was loading the weapon, Mr. Coleman shot one round from a .22 Caliber handgun through the door in the direction of the victim. The round missed the victim and it was later recovered for evidence. According to the victim, Mr. Coleman had stolen the firearm from the residence earlier in the day. At first, Mr. Coleman refused to disclose where the weapons were, but he eventually told the deputies. The firearm was located on the ground in front of a residence on the east side of Vandivort Street, and the knife was located in the area where he was taken into custody. The evidence and crime scene were photographed and the evidence and Mr. Coleman was taken into custody by the Salem Police Department.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce membership meeting will be held on Wednesday the 9^th of December at the Salem TCRC, at noon. Instead of a speaker this month there will be hearing from of speakers from the Chamber Board discussing the number of board seats that will be vacated this year and how you can nominate an employee or yourself to be a board member. They will also be going over briefly some of the events for 2010 and some changes that you might expect in one particular fundraising event.

The Dent County Fire Protection District is still accepting new or used toys in very good, clean condition for the 2009 Toys For Tots Toys Drive. Those wishing to assist the toy drive can drop off any new or used toys at the Dent County Fire Protection District Station, the Salem Police Department, Dollar General or at the KSMO Radio station in the front room. Monetary donations are also being accepted. For more information on donating toys to the 2009 Dent County Fire Toy Drive, call the Dent County Fire Protection District at 729-3250.

An accident occurred at 11:15 Sunday evening in Dent County on County Road 6150 about three and half miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Ford F250 driven by 18-year old Tadd Mansfield of Salem was traveling southbound on county road 6150. The Ford traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Mansfield suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford sustained extensive damage and was driven from the scene.

Phillip Moser scored 30 points for Salem but it was not enough to overcome a 21-5 first quarter run by Waynesville as Salem lost to the Tigers, 65-54. Salem’s record falls to 1-2 and they will face Pacific this Friday night starting at 6:00 with the JV contest with the varsity game to follow.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed right-handed pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract. The one-year deal is for $7.5 million plus incentives. Over 10 big league seasons with Florida, Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco, Penny is 105-84 with a 4.14 ERA over 279 games, all but four of those as a starter.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Detroit to face the Red Wings starting at 6:30. You can hear the first period live and the third period on a taped delayed basis on KSMO Radio. Tuesday, the Blues traded minor league defenseman Brendan Bell and forward Tomas Kana to Columbus for forward Pascal Pelletier.

The Missouri Tigers will be on the road at Oral Roberts tonight starting at just after 7:00. Missouri is 5-2 going into the game. You can hear the contest on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Lula (Black) Miles of Pocahontas, Arkansas, formerly of Salem, age 76, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Roseberry Cemetery in Lenox.

Funeral services for Ethan C. Schafer of Salem, age 89, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00, with Masonic services to be held at 7:30 Wednesday evening. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Chester C. “Craig” Duckworth of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Salem, age 98, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 with Masonic Services to be held at 6:30 Wednesday night.

Funeral services for Madge D. Floyd of Maryland Height, formerly of Salem, age 91, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Teresa Gargus of St. James, age 49, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery in rural Phelps County. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation.

Funeral services for Ava Bishop of Steelville, age 85, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the Kingdom Hall of Bourbon.

Funeral services for Dustin Ryan Gill of Salem, age 22, will be held Friday 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gill Family for funeral expenses.
