The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Sarah Hultine-Massengale from the Dent County Extension asked the commissioners if they would be interested in participating in the Youth Leadership Program again this year. She said that she had scheduled the 20 or so kids in the program to tour the courthouse with County Clerk Angie Curley on Wednesday, January 12th at 3:30, and she wanted to have the children meet with the commissioners after the tour in their office at about 4:15. The commissioners said they would participate and thought the Youth Leadership Program was an excellent program for the children. Hultine-Massengale also told the commissioners that the professor involved with the Project Management Teams from Missouri S&T would like to come back to Dent County and have his students work on new ideas for the area. She invited the commissioners to the meeting at the Salem TCRC on December 16th at 1:00 to meet with the city leaders, professor from Missouri S&T and Richard Cavender from the MRPC to discuss and determine projects of interest that the students could work on. The commissioners said they planned on attending. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the ground is frozen so no grading will be done. Workers will be repairing road signs, cutting brush on Dent County Road 5600 and working on the building addition at the Road and Bridge building. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that if the ground thaws, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2090 and 4060. Larson stated that workers will be cutting limbs on Dent County Road 2200, putting up and checking for downed signs, and getting phone bids for fuel. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he had been elected to serve on the County Commissioners Legislative Committee at the CCAM meeting, and that he will be attending the MRPC meeting Thursday in St. James. The commissioners then approved changing their insurance election options for employees. The County will still pay for the health insurance with a deductible of $3,500 for all employees, but the employees can pay an additional premium to reduce the deductible to $1,500 or $500. Originally, these other policy elections had $2,500 and $1,500 deductibles, but a number of Senate Bill 40 employees already had the $500 deductible and wanted to continue with that amount. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Hunters checked 15,226 deer during the antlerless portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season November 24th through December 5th, bringing the tally for the year to 217,281. Top harvest counties for the 12-day antlerless hunt were Macon with 453 deer checked, Benton with 430 and Callaway with 401. This year’s antlerless-deer harvest fell 31 percent short of last year’s figure. The decrease continues the trend set during the previous three portions of this year’s firearms deer season. In all, firearms deer hunters have checked 12,595 fewer deer this year than they had by this time last year, a decrease of 5.5 percent.  Two of the firearms deer season’s six portions remain. Hunters typically shoot 10,000 to 15,000 deer during the 11-day muzzleloader hunt and fewer than 2,000 during the two-day late portion of the youth hunt. The decrease in firearms deer harvest so far this year partly is due to the abundance of acorns in some parts of Missouri. When acorns are abundant, deer do not have to move around as much to find food, and they are less likely to be concentrated around food sources. This makes them less vulnerable to hunters. The muzzleloader portion of firearms deer season runs from December 18th through 28th. The late youth portion is January 1st and 2nd. Archery deer and turkey season runs through January 15th.

The Salvation Army Service Unit of Dent County would like to announce that this year’s Christmas kettle campaign is going on now through Friday, December 24th. The kettles will be located at Wal-Mart, Country Mart, and Dollar General. Counter Kettles will be placed at various locations around Dent County. This year’s goal is $21,000 and with the continuation of a local mail appeal and the hundreds of volunteer hours donated by individuals, businesses, and clubs to ring the bell at the Christmas kettle, the Salvation Army is hopeful that local citizens will support this campaign generously as they have in the past. This year, David Dittman, a Vice-President at the Bank of Salem, will serve as the Honorary Christmas Campaign Chairman and he thanks everyone for their donation on money, time or both during this Christmas season to make it a brighter 2011 for hose less fortunate. The funds raised during this campaign will be used to assist the citizens of Dent County with utility assistance, and prescriptions. The Salvation Army also supplies local school children with backpacks, and provides assistance to families who have lost everything due to a fire. The generosity of the citizens of Dent County will enable the local Salvation Army to continue to meet the needs of those who need assistance in 2011. If you would like to help by ringing the bell as the Christmas kettle or need additional information about the local Salvation Army, please call Jim and Diane Boulware at 729-6685 or Sherry Lea at 729-8163.
