The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that District 1 crews are still removing trees and debris from roadways between Turtle and Bunker. Simpson also said that ice and snow is still being removed from roadways throughout the district. Commissioner J.J. Tune reported District 2 crews are still putting sand and salt on various roads and also pushing snow out further on roadways to make driving conditions more safe. At the previous meeting, Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock brought by the real estate and personal tax abatements for the Commission to review and sign. Also at the meeting, Howard Goforth stopped by to say that the residents on Dent County Road 424A had agreed to share in the cost of chip and sealing their road in 2007. Commissioner Simpson said he would be contacting the residents in February to inform them of the total cost. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
This is the time of year many people take advantage of school breaks and the holidays to go on vacation, visit friends, or just get out of the house for holiday shopping. Unfortunately, empty houses also mean burglars will have countless good prospects. People are busy, distracted, and not always focusing on the more mundane things in life, like making sure their home is secure. Here are a few precautions to help prevent homeowners from falling victim to thieves this holiday season. Start by making a full exterior examination of your home, making sure there is nothing they can see from the outside or climb on. Always leave you home in a secure state, regardless of the time you expect to be away. When you are away from the house, particularly for an extended period, be sure to make it look lived-in. Use timers on lights or even radios. In many cases installing a home alarm system will give you protection. Walk around the interior of your home and inventory your major possessions. Make a list, video tape them or even put them in a safe deposit box. Tell a trusted neighbor on your block that you will be away. The only thing worse than losing your possessions is not being sufficiently covered to recoup your losses, so check to see if your homeowner’s insurance coverage is up to date as well.
The Salem Area Community Betterment Association wants to remind people to submit their Community Wide Assessment Surveys as soon as possible as they would like to start tabulating the results. With the bad weather experienced in the county, the SACBA have extended the deadline to next week to submit your surveys at the Visitor Center, The Salem News, or in the outside book return at the Salem Public Library at 102 North Jackson in Salem. Completed surveys can also be mailed to the SACBA office at P O Box 732, Salem, MO 65560. Additional copies of the survey can also be pickup up at the above locations as well as the Salem TCRC and city administrative offices.

Kirsten Stephens scored 19 points, Natalie Howard netted 12 points and Allison Jones contributed 11 more as the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers dominated the Mountain Grove Lady Panthers last night at Cabool, 60-25. Salem moves into the championship game again at the Lady Bulldog Classic and will once again play Seymore Saturday evening at 6:00 in Cabool. Salem is 4-0 on the year.
The Salem Boys Basketball Tigers will attempt to stop a two-game losing streak as they face the Owensville Dutchmen tonight in their home opener. The JV will start things out at 6:00 with the varsity game to follow. You can hear the varsity game on KSMO starting at about 7:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Travis Wrightsman.
The Missouri Basketball Tigers put their 9-0 record on the line when they face Purdue tomorrow in non-conference play. Game time is set for 1;00 and you can hear the broadcast on KSMO starting at 12:30.
The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with right-hander Gil Meche on a five-year contract for a reported $55 million. The largest contract in Royals' history is Mike Sweeney's current five-year, $55 million deal that is set to expire at the end of next season. Meche, 28, was 11-8 last season for Seattle, while pitching to a 4.48 ERA. Since entering the league in 1999 with the Mariners, Meche has amassed a 55-44 mark to go along with a 4.65 ERA. The Royals then released pitcher Runelvys Hernandez on Thursday to clear a spot on their 40-man roster. Hernandez was cut loose to make room for right-handed pitcher Joakim Soria, who the club selected from the San Diego organization with the second overall selection in Thursday's Rule 5 draft.
Pavel Datsyuk scored the game-winning goal with 1:37 left in overtime as Detroit erased an early three-goal deficit to beat St. Louis, 4-3, in the finale of a home-and-home series with the Blues. Petr Cajanek scored two goals in the first period while Dallas Drake scored a shorthanded goal early in the second for the slumping Blues, who have dropped their last six games. Jason Bacashihua made 39 saves for St. Louis, which will have to make due without its two top goaltenders for an extended period of time. The Blues will be back in action tomorrow night at 7:00 as they will host Columbus and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Funeral services for Ethel P. Tucker of Rolla, age 87, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Fort Wyman Baptist Church.
A memorial service for Jeremy Blaze Blanchard of Salem, age 31, will be held Saturday at the Our Savior Lutheran Church on Highway 68 at 1:00. A memorial fund has been set up for his children at Town and Country Bank. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services for Betty Nash of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial service for Steven L. Howard of Jonesboro, Arkansas, formerly of Steelville, age 42, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Michael Lee Brinkley of Salem, age 50, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Mike Brinkley Memorial Fund.
Memorial services for W. Ray Vickery of Salem, age 67, will be held Monday, December 11th at noon at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 at the church. Interment will be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Museum or Dent County Animal Shelter. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
